Today, meet Linium Biochemicals, one of our 2024 Finalists! 💡 Linium Biochemicals unlocks a new supply of fossil-free and low-carbon raw materials for essential everyday products. They use #lignin, a major wood component, the only natural and abundant source of aromatic molecules. ⚗💚 🤓 Did you know? Aromatic #chemicals are an essential class of compounds: they amount to nearly half of all chemicals used and they are needed in most sectors, from plastics to cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, dyes, etc. However, their production will cause 3% of global GHG emissions by 2050 in the best-case scenario. Thank you Ludovic Sinet! 🤓 Learn more about Linium Biochemicals and 100+ other #startups here: https://lnkd.in/eK6nUHxh #lowcarbon #innovation

Biomanufacturing uses fermentation, enzymes and microorganisms instead of energy-intensive, synthetic processes to make many of the products used every day: pharmaceuticals, raw materials (plastics, paper and textiles), chemicals to develop soaps and detergents, food fortification, and more. Synonym, a strategic partner for biomanufacturing companies, predicts that it will become a $200 billion market over the next decade. We spoke with Co-Founder Joshua Lachter to learn more about this trajectory and how Synonym supports what they believe to be the “next manufacturing revolution.”

Unlocking Industrial Potential: The Role of Oxidative Enzymes in the #ROBUSTOOproject The three oxidative enzymes selected in #ROBUSTOOproject could have significant industrial application. Laccases can catalyze the conversion of industrial lignin into bio-based resins and biomaterials. Unspecific peroxygenases (UPOs) can catalyze regio- and stereo-selective oxygenations of vegetable oils, which represent a large proportion of the renewable raw materials currently available for the chemical industry, to obtain epoxidized and hydroxylated intermediates and fine chemicals. Finally, hydroxymethyl furfural oxidases (HMFOs) can fully oxidize HMF derived from sugars into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), which has applications to produce bio-based plastic polyesters. element6 Dynamics and PAPACKS® Announce Partnership Intentions 🤝 ⭐️ Largest industrial hemp deal in U.S. history is a milestone for decarbonization efforts ⭐️ BOULDER, COLORADO, USA (May 22, 2024) – element6 Dynamics and German-based PAPACKS are pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to Joint Venture on the US expansion of PAPACKS molded and thermal formed packaging in partnership with element6 Dynamics, a US modern pioneer in industrial hemp. Details of this MOU are confidential; however, this Joint Venture will offer regenerative alternative fiber (industrial hemp) packaging solutions for consumer-packaged goods, pharmaceutical, technology and general companies endeavoring to decarbonize, transition from plastic, and reduce deforestation in their supply chain. “Our goal is to provide new materials that are regenerative, not extractive and introduce processes that decarbonize and have little to no waste at prices that are competitive with incumbent solutions,” said Kimberly Kovacs, CEO of element6 Dynamics and past Forbes 50 over 50 Women in Finance honoree. “PAPACKS® is an innovative leader in fiber-based material, focused on sustainable solutions and we are thrilled to partner with them to bring this Joint Venture into the US.” element6 Dynamics is a US leader in industrial hemp including but not limited to genetic breeding, cultivation, and conversion of industrial hemp biomass (to mimic characteristics of traditional softwood Kraft Pulp). element6 Dynamics pulp (e6 Pulp) has been proven as a drop-in market ready pulp solution with new or existing papermill and packaging infrastructure. PAPACKS set the standard in Europe for sustainable fiber-based packaging, catering to both barrier-specific food and non-food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics packaging needs. Their commitment to innovation is globally recognized through over 75 patent families, 30 awards, and more than a decade of pioneering work. The parties intend to construct 10 fully integrated molded and thermal formed manufacturing facilities throughout the US and taking a bio-regional approach in locating each facility near and around their cultivation footprint, and academic partnerships, ensuring a cost effective, environmental solution to reshoring business in a sustainable, and responsible way. “We believe that element6 Dynamics will be a strong financial and strategic partner for us in the United States,” said PAPACKS CEO Tahsin Dag, who was (elected “CEO of the Year 2024 in the packaging industry” by European CEO Awards). “The Team at element6 Dynamics has successfully delivered the scale we require to deliver to our international customer base. The combination of our respective skills, knowledge, technologies, and shared vision positions our partnership for success.” https://lnkd.in/dC7p54Rr

Did you know? Biotechnology is driving defossilation, helping companies to shift from fossil-based to renewable biobased feedstocks. We use biotechnology to create our biosolutions, such as our rhamnolipid biosurfactants. These surfactants offer both sustainability and performance. That’s why they are suitable for a wide range of applications, including cleaning, personal care, coatings, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and many more. We were the first in the world to develop an industrial-scale manufacturing process for rhamnolipid biosurfactants. This is a great example of how we are using biosolutions to drive transformation. The current plastic industries are increasing awareness of health and the environment with concern for reducing CO2 emissions. Alternatively, one of the key solutions is utilizing natural resources of feedstock to produce bio-plasticizers for bioplastic industries. Here is one of my review articles published in Biotechnology Progress talks about “Developments of biobased plasticizers for compostable polymers in the green packaging applications: A review” The article’s link https://lnkd.in/dZKNVs3T

🌱 Biomanufacturing: A US Opportunity for Growth 🌱 As biotech innovations continue to evolve, now is the time for the US to leverage its strength in ag for feedstocks and invest in fermentation capacity. From sustainable chemicals to advanced protein solutions, biomanufacturing has the potential to transform industries—but only if we build the infrastructure to support it. 🧬🌾 The US is uniquely positioned with its vast agricultural resources. By scaling up fermentation facilities, we can capitalize on these feedstocks and reduce dependence on overseas production. But this can’t happen without the support of government initiatives to help build out this critical capacity. BioMADE, a partnership with the DOD and industry including Novonesis, is a great first step in addressing pilot-scale capacity. There is still much more to do. This is an opportunity for both economic growth and environmental sustainability. Let’s not miss it. #Biomanufacturing #Biotech #Sustainability #Innovation #Fermentation #BioSolutions #novonesis
