Northeastern, the university whose archrival is somehow not Northwestern, has reached Ivy League admission rates. The Boston school accepted a mere 5.6% of applicants last year, down from 32% a decade ago, per the Wall Street Journal. Why has it become so hard to get into Northeastern? Because of surging interest in the university’s “co-op” programs, which allow students to get up to 18 months of full-time paid work experience in addition to classes. These jobs aren’t the usual gigs at restaurants or the campus bookstore—employer partners include Google, Tesla, and local hospitals. The strategy aims to produce career-ready graduates, and that appears to be working: According to Northeastern, 95% of students reported being employed full time or in graduate school within nine months of graduation.

From the hottest housing market to being the best city to start your career, Cleveland remains a top ten contender in some very important categories. Although it may be hard for younger workers to resist the appeal of big cities, these places fall short in vital categories like housing, cost of living, and jobs. Cleveland consistently lands in the sweet spot of the affordable cost of living, plentiful jobs that hire frequently, top ranking in essential industries like medical and manufacturing, and a growing international community that is welcoming to all. As always, I’m asking, how does this ranking apply to our international community? Cleveland may be ranked one of the best cities for new grads, but we need to ensure that our city is also considered one of the best cities for international college grads. For us to grow our population, we cannot forget to grow our international community, and this begins with our employers being open to hiring international. For some employers, hiring international might mean stepping out of their comfort zone, but the result is a greater population, more diversity, and a stronger economy. We have the exceptional housing, cost of living, and culture to attract international people – now, we need to make sure that they have the job opportunities that allow them to continue living in and contributing to our region.

Overseeing two of our Cedarville Admissions student teams is the most rewarding aspect of my position. The ability to create a culture that hopefully students want to be a part of and building relationships with them is invaluable! But all of that starts with hiring effectively. Here’s what I’ve learned: If you’re in a management role, know how you’re willing and able to invest in your team and let that drive your hiring decisions, even more than a candidate’s technical ability. Of course you want the most qualified candidate, but “qualified” is more subjective than a checkbox of skills. No candidate is perfect and neither are you. Your responsibility is not to avoid all weak points, but assess what weak points you can handle in your team and commit yourself to building into them. The most crucial question I’ve asked myself is: What do I have the time, desire, and skills to build into? At the end of the day, different leaders hire different types of people because of their answer to this question. And in different seasons and for different roles, this may be different! In my opinion, technical ability can be taught; authenticity, transparency, and self-motivation can not (in most cases). If Candidate A is weaker than Candidate B in technical skills but hits these marks, and I have the time, desire, and skills to invest in refining those skills, then Candidate A is a sure choice for me.

💡 Interesting article in The Wall Street Journal on how college students are gravitating to university co-op programs for real-world work experience. Four questions: 1. Should more universities collaborate with employers on offering co-op programs? 2. Should employers seek out more opportunities for collaboration with universities through these programs? 3. Should students give greater consideration towards making these programs a part of their college experience? 4. What should be the main role(s) of university faculty members in these programs?
