A 165-foot-tall (50 meters) Starship upper stage just fired up all six of its Raptor engines in a full-duration "static fire" test at SpaceX's Starbase site in South Texas, the company announced today (March 25). Static fires, in which engines are briefly lit while a vehicle remains anchored to the pad, are common prelaunch tests. SpaceX conducted this one to prep for the fourth Starship test flight, which could take place as soon as early May. SpaceX is still analyzing data from the third Starship flight, which launched from Starbase on March 14. The 400-foot-tall (122 m) megarocket — which consists of the upper stage, known as Ship, and the huge Super Heavy first-stage booster — performed quite well on that test mission, according to SpaceX. For example, both stages aced their ascent burns, and Super Heavy conducted a successful "boostback" burn to get in position for a splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico. [SpaceX's Starship To Fly Again 'In 4 Weeks,' Elon Musk says] We won't have to wait much longer to see the most powerful rocket ever built take to the skies again, if all goes according to plan. That rocket, SpaceX's 400-foot-tall (122 meters) Starship, has flown four test flights to date. And number five should be just around the corner, according to SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk. "Flight 5 in 4 weeks," Musk said Friday (July 5) via X, the social media platform he owns. Starship consists of two elements: a first-stage booster known as Super Heavy and a 165-foot-tall upper-stage spacecraft called Starship, or simply Ship. Both are designed to be reusable. Starship's four test flights occurred in April and November of 2023 and March 14 and June 6 of this year. All have launched from Starbase, SpaceX's site in South Texas, near the city of Brownsville. The vehicle has performed better on each successive flight. The most recent launch, for example, went entirely according to plan; Super Heavy and Ship separated on time and came back to Earth as planned, splashing down in the Gulf of Mexico and the Indian Ocean, respectively. That success helps explain the relatively rapid turnaround for Flight 5. Because Starship performed as expected on June 6, SpaceX has fewer issues to analyze ahead of the next launch. And the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration didn't require a mishap investigation, so technical readiness, rather than regulatory approval, is the main timeline driver for Flight 5. Flight 5 will feature an exciting new twist, if all goes according to plan: SpaceX has said it aims to bring the giant booster back for a pinpoint landing on Starbase's launch mount, an effort that will be aided by the "chopstick" arms of the facility's launch tower. This bold strategy will increase Starship's flight cadence, allowing the booster to be inspected, refurbished and relaunched more rapidly, Musk has said. "Starship is essential to both SpaceX’s and NASA’s future. SpaceX is counting on Starship to be able to launch payloads such as full-sized V2 Starlink satellites. The company is currently launching smaller versions of those satellites on Falcon 9 rockets, but the more capable V2 Starlink satellites are designed for Starship".

SpaceX has called their second-ever test flight a success! 🚀 Over the weekend, the largest ever built next-generation megarocket launched on its second test flight. Shortly after stage separation, the rocket's massive Super Heavy booster exploded, with the Starship's upper-stage vehicle itself detonating before reaching its target altitude in what SpaceX called a "rapid unscheduled disassembly". This was the second test flight for the fully integrated Starship, the first lift-off being back in April this year. April's Starship launch ended with a self-destruct command about four minutes into the flight, turning the tumbling rocket into a fireball. One reason for the disassembly was due to the failure of Starship's two stages to separate. To prevent this problem from happening again, SpaceX decided to use a new strategy: hot staging. This is where the upper stage's engines begin firing before Starship and Super Heavy have fully separated. Starship's stage separation occurred on time over the weekend, about 2 minutes and 41 seconds after lift-off, appearing to go smoothly, but the Super Heavy booster exploded shortly afterward. SpaceX has said how successful the flight was due to all of the data they were able to collect to help improve the next flight, even though they did have a rapid unscheduled disassembly. #spacex #starship #superheavy
