9 strategies to create an immersive 360° virtual campus tour AND keep your campus safe

Exploring Innovative Learning at the Space Dome I had the pleasure of visiting Niall Dalton Dalton today to learn more about the fantastic work he does with our Space Dome on campus. For those who haven't experienced it yet, the Space Dome is an immersive, large-scale dome that can project movies and images, creating an engaging and educational experience for visitors of all ages. While it’s often used to inspire curiosity about space, Niall and his team are demonstrating how its potential extends far beyond looking at the stars. Today, I saw some brilliant examples of how students from other departments are creatively using the done . It’s inspiring to see such a versatile resource being used. I’m excited to share a project we produced at OnlineCampusTour, where I’ve been leading our efforts to create immersive 360° virtual tours. This University of Tampa project showcases our technology’s capabilities and our innovative approach to virtual campus experiences. University of Tampa | 360° Virtual Tour https://lnkd.in/eknjujYi Using our robotic technology and a 360° camera, we captured the campus in a way that closely mimics an in-person visit, allowing prospective students to explore the location from anywhere, getting a real sense of the space and atmosphere. Unlike traditional virtual tours that rely on static shots and jumping hotspots, our solution replicates real-world movement, offering a seamless and engaging walkthrough that’s as close to reality as it gets. Our 360° tracking shots create the almost dream-like effect of an eye-level camera smoothly floating through the air—without a camera operator or tripod in sight. Stabilized Tracking Shot https://lnkd.in/e_3qeVmG This is how I brought UT to life: 🎬 Pre-Production: The journey began with detailed consultations, working closely with the University of Tampa to understand their vision. These discussions were crucial for crafting a shot list that would capture the unique character of the campus. Next, I carefully packed our robotic equipment and 360° camera, ensuring the sensitive LiDAR system was well-protected and compliant with FAA/TSA regulations for battery transport. 🎥 Production: Once on-site, the real work began. Using LiDAR technology, I mapped out precise paths across the campus, defining key points for the robot to follow. This ensured a smooth, continuous capture of all the important areas. 🛠️ Post-Production: Back in the studio, I started by stitching the equirectangular footage using Fusion Studio and Mistika VR. To keep the editing process smooth and efficient, I generated proxies in Premiere. Once the footage was ready, I assembled the tour by blending tracking and static shots, adding consistent panning to keep the visuals dynamic. To balance the exposure between exteriors and interiors, I applied window pull techniques in PS, while VR Mocha was used to remove some of the reflections. However, due to tight deadlines, I couldn’t fully remove the robot’s shadow from all shots, so I placed the campus logo at the bottom. Typically, I would use tools like Content-Aware Fill, Mettle Super Suite, and Canvas360 to track and eliminate such unwanted elements.
