Exciting times in our STEM Lab this summer 🏖 Earlier this week, we kicked off the 6th Annual Robotics Drone Academy with a great lineup of experts and mentors. Andrea F Daniele from Duckietown helped our students start building their drones. Amanda Smith and Philip Sieg from Amazon Fulfillment Technologies & Robotics and Samantha Johnson from Tatum Robotics inspired students with their career / academic advice and insights during fireside chats. We’re excited to have Brown University help guide our students as they complete their drones. Stay tuned as we prepare to fly them this Friday! Nice to see at least the for-profit manufacturers and colleges trying to give a small group of kids some exposure to the real world before they graduate high school. Every boy had shop classes in electrical, carpentry, metalwork, and drafting when I was a kid. We even had a ham radio club and teachers and local retired men who gave time, materials, and money to help any kid that wanted help. This shows us that all along it was industry that drove education. When American industry needed technical minds, such minds were encouraged and rewarded in every city. Today, it's a few high-tech centers with expensive private colleges and niche oriented industries that drive the effort to find tomorrows college students and technically minded employees.
