Huge #Formula1 weekend now underway in Austin, Texas. This year BizCosts.com is forecasting the overall economic impact of Austin’s Formula 1 to top the “Mendoza Line” of $1 billion.
This includes everything from hotels, rental cars, restaurants, ticket sales, retail, Airbnbs & ride share spending. Hotel spending alone will top $125 million. Some $30 million in sales taxes will go into government coffers and another $4.5 million revenue will be generated by hotel occupancy taxes. Attendance should top the 475,000 mark this year.
Add to all of that the influx of influential business, media and sports leaders from around the globe providing a great platform for deal making and other business activity.
Spill over benefits will extend along the high-growth SH 130 & I-35 Corridors south into #SanAntonio (where hotels are roughly half the price of #Austin which is averaging $500 a night this big weekend).

With this weekend’s #USGrandPrix at Circuit of The Americas - a personal favourite of Tom Millen - he looks back at the growth of the sport Stateside since he started working at the event.
“Formula 1’s rise in the US is a masterclass in the power of storytelling. For over 8 years, I worked with F1 teams thanks to KLH, and remember a time when the sport catered mostly to purists—people like me, who love the stats and data.
Back then, F1 struggled to gain a foothold in the US market. From the chaos of the Indianapolis GP, where only six cars raced, a five-year hiatus, to eventually finding a home in Austin, Texas, the sport just seemingly connecting with American audiences.
Back at the start, I’d stand next to an F1 car at events, and the first question I’d get was, “What’s Formula 1?” Maybe they’d heard of Lewis Hamilton, but that was it. I was even at an event with a former F1 world champion, and hardly anyone recognised him.
Then Netflix launched ‘Drive to Survive’, and it was a game-changer. Now, millions of fans know all 20 drivers, the teams, the cars, and the rivalries. It’s still the same sport, but the fanbase has exploded.
Sure, some purists argue that some of the storytelling hypes up drama, but it’s hard to deny the impact. Now, we have more people to share our passion with. For instance, this coming US Grand Prix is sold out with over 400,000 attendees.
For those new fans, though, the best part is yet to come. There’s a whole history they’ve yet to uncover— Fangio, Ascari, Hunt, Lauda, Senna, Prost, Mansell, Schumacher, Hakkinen, Alonso, Hamilton... and so many more legends. I’m honestly a bit jealous—they get to discover it all for the first time.”

In the world of Formula 1, we often marvel at the skill and talent of drivers like Max Verstappen. Their victories on the track are celebrated, their faces plastered on billboards, and their names known to millions. But behind every successful driver, there's a team of dedicated individuals working tirelessly in the shadows, away from the spotlight.
Think about it: Max Verstappen might be the one crossing the finish line first, but he's supported by an entire team of engineers, mechanics, strategists, and countless others who make it all possible. They're the unsung heroes of the sport, the ones who ensure that every bolt is tightened, every strategy is executed flawlessly, and every detail is accounted for.
The same is true in every aspect of life, whether it's in business, academia, or any other pursuit. While the spotlight may shine brightest on the ones at the top, it's important to remember and appreciate the contributions of those who work behind the scenes.

😬I As Lando Norris once said on Drive to Survive:
Chaos? chaos.
🇩🇪I Such was the nature of the Berlin E Prix today, with overtakes, action, and plenty of debris scattered around.
🇳🇿 I Amidst this, one Kiwi made his way from 21st on lap 21, to win the race by nearly five seconds, an incredible comeback drive.
I've covered all this in my latest race report, and you can read it here

For a while, I started feeling like I was doing everything right but still falling short—wondering, ‘Am I not enough?’ Then I came across this video of Max Verstappen after winning his 100th podium. Instead of celebrating, he said, ‘That’s 88 missed podiums.’ I realised that his success is rooted in this mindset: always striving for better, never settling. It made me realize that setbacks aren’t failures—they're part of the path to growth. Now, I’m seeing my journey through a new lens.

F1 fans see Hamilton's move as a SEISMIC JOLT that could give Mad Max and Red Bull a run for their money. My takeaway is a bit different.
I think it's a reminder that keeping superstars on your roster - on the grid, on the pitch, or in the boardroom - involves more than bling and cha-ching.
MVPs need to be genuine stakeholders in your vision.
Constant communication is key.
Treat your MVPs not as commodities, but as emotional, passionate beings. Keep figuring out how to channel their energy into YOUR grid.
"Why would Hamilton make this move?
Was it monetary?
Did he not like the plans Mercedes has for its car?
Does he prefer the color red?"
If you have to ask, you're not doing enough to keep your MVP on the roster.
It's not about coddling. It's about partnering.

I'm excited to share my latest article, "Analyzing the Shift from Formula 1 to IndyCar, with Speculation on Logan Sargeant's Future Path," now up on Girls Club.
This is one of my favorite pieces because it intertwines my two favorite motorsports and focuses on Logan Sargeant, the lone American on the F1 grid. Despite the negative media surrounding his F1 career, I explore how a move to IndyCar could highlight his skills and benefit him both mentally and emotionally. Check it out!
As always, thank you to my editor Carla Martínez
