In the previous lectures of the System Design Workshop, we have learned about the core concepts, patterns, and theories of system design. Congratulations! We have built a solid foundation in system design. Now, what's next? Theory is over, practical part begins! We will now conduct case studies of various systems that will help us solve real-life problems related to system design. In today's lecture, we will do a case study on URL shortener systems like bit.ly and cut.ly. However, before the case study, some additional prerequisites will be covered. Today, we will learn about the following topics: - System Design Interview - System Design Pattern - Case Study: URL Shortener System The link to the video will be provided in the comment box. Digging deeper into research to inform design was all about today. After talking through ideas with our professor, I chose to focus on the Financial Struggles of Students, which is more than just running low on funds. It’s about the rising costs of education, the lack of financial education, and how limited support systems leave students vulnerable. I used the 5W + H framework to really understand the scope—exploring who is affected, what specific barriers they face, when the pressure hits hardest, and why these struggles persist. This helped me see the problem from multiple perspectives and move away from quick assumptions. The main takeaway: thorough research lays the groundwork for meaningful design. A huge thanks to Ajit Bhagat sir for helping us clarify our focus today!

Just finished the course “Trauma-Informed Design” by Melissa Eggleston and Carol F. Scott, PhD! This course is an essential resource for any designer looking to create more inclusive and empathetic digital experiences. It is only the beginning but it’s a great start. The knowledge gained here is invaluable in today's world, where understanding and addressing trauma is increasingly important in all aspects of design. The course did an excellent job of not just explaining basic concepts, but also demonstrating how to apply them in real-world design scenarios. This practical approach helped bridge the gap between theory and application, making the learning experience both engaging and valuable. This course and it’s resources have not only improved my professional skills but have also made me a more thoughtful and considerate designer. It's a must-take! As a 15+ something, I always thought that creativity has got something to do with drawing and creating something on a white paper. As I grew older to 20 + something, I thought it was creating something new which doesn't exist already. Due to these assumptions, I thought that I was not creative as I erased a lot more than drawing (turning the paper black 😁) and couldn't create anything new that doesn't exist already. My views changed when I started working, as one of my colleagues changed the definition of creativity for me by explaining that ideation is creativity. In the next few years, I was introduced to the concept of out-of-the-box thinking and was told that it is how creativity is defined. I thought I sucked at it too because I was confused with the term itself but the fog cleared in my head regarding creativity. I was recently introduced to the concept of 'inside the box' thinking due to a course I took up - 'New Product Development'. There was a reference book for the course called 'Inside the box' by Drew Boyd and Jacob Goldenberg. This book has so many techniques like subtraction, multiplication and division, task unification and attribute dependency to inculcate the concept of SIT (Systematic Inventive Thinking). They are such wonderful techniques and help a lot. (Being a Maths student, I was confused with the terms initially 🙃 but the examples in the book helped me understand better and why the terms are used like that). This book has changed my perception about creativity and brought so much clarity to me. That is why they say - as you grow older, you grow wise. I'm also grateful that I took up the course and I bought the reference book. NOTE: My husband is a UX/graphic designer and I hope living with him for the past 13 years rubbed off some creativity into me as well and I enjoyed the book more. #Day2 For today's class We started by revisiting the challenges we noted down yesterday and worked on clustering and prioritizing them. This involved discussions with peers, which turned out to be more insightful than I expected. It was interesting to see how my idea of what was important didn’t always match what others thought. It made me realize how easy it is to get stuck in my own perspective and how important it is to approach design with an open mind, focusing on what matters to users rather than my personal assumptions. The highlight of the session was a video about the Segway, shared by Prof. Ajit Bhagat and Prof. Divyadarshan C S. It showed how even the most innovative ideas can fail when designers work in isolation, assuming they know what users need without truly understanding them. The Segway was technically brilliant, but it didn’t resonate with people, and that’s what ultimately matters in design. This session reinforced a valuable lesson: design isn’t about being right or having the coolest idea, it’s about solving real problems for real people. Empathy and genuine listening are at the heart of it. I’m starting to understand that meaningful design is less about the designer’s vision and more about the user’s needs.
