We have been supporting Flight Centre Travel Group – which has an amazing international #growth and #innovation story – since 2008. More recently, we have helped it to accelerate its digital transformation with an innovative payments factory. In practice, what that means is we have helped to radically simplify its banking across 22 markets, making it much easier to move money around the world between its more than 450 iconic red-fronted stores. We were there for Flight Centre throughout the existential threat that COVID-19 posed its business. Since then, the travel sector has bounced back to around 96% of pre-pandemic levels - and by diversifying, Flight Centre’s corporate business transactions rose 11% year-on-year over the past 12 months. My favorite airline just made it harder to fly to Europe with credit card points. But here's a secret… Their promo rewards are still intact for this month. (We’ll see about next month). Flying Blue (Air France/KLM's frequent flier program) increased their award rates: - Economy: 25k points (was 20k) - Premium Economy: 40k - Business: 60k (was 50k) Each month they host "promo awards" a 25% discount to fly to Europe from select cities. For the remainder of the month you can still book flights to Europe from ATL, MIA, and PHX for just 15k pts one way. For reference: That's like flying to Paris for $150 worth of points, and every major credit card transfers transfer to Flying Blue btw. (AMEX, Chase, Citi, Capital One) The catch? You won't see these deals on their calendar view - to see the discounted price you have to click through the date. You can also use an award search tool like Seats Aero to help. 🌟 Exploring the World of Loyalty Points 🌍 Beyond my passion for crypto, I have another obsession: loyalty points, particularly air miles. If you've spent more than 5 minutes with me, you've probably heard my spiel on why air miles are incredible. Here are two key insights about air miles that often surprise people: - You can purchase air miles instead of earning them, and still get excellent value. - You're not limited to using them only on the airline you earned or purchased them from. My primary goal? To fly in premium cabins at the lowest possible cost. Currently, Air Canada's Aeroplan loyalty program is offering a fantastic promotion: a 125% bonus on purchased miles until July 12th. This sale showcases the tremendous value of purchasing air miles. For example, purchasing 60k Aeroplan points with a 75k bonus yields 135k points, priced at CAD 2,100 / £1,202 / $1,540. This translates to an effective cost per mile of 0.0156 CAD / £0.0089 / $0.0114. The attached screenshot demonstrates how this can translate into an 83% discount when using miles for a Business Class flight from Dubai to Frankfurt on Lufthansa, compared to paying in cash. However, it's essential to consider the drawbacks: - Availability can be limited, especially during peak seasons or popular routes. - Booking for multiple people can be challenging. - Airlines may devalue miles unexpectedly, so buying speculatively isn't advised. - Generally, you won't earn airline status credits (except with Virgin Airlines) when booking with miles. Insightful discussions at Mastercard Global Partnerships’ Asia Pacific Travel Forum in Singapore last week. With stakeholders across the travel payments value chain present, it was clear that we face many common challenges. The good news is the willingness that is apparent to work together and innovate in this space. It was great to have the opportunity to bring more awareness to understanding airline and travel intermediary credit risk during my session with Paul van Alfen from Up in the Air | Consultancy.  Understanding the specific nature of travel merchant risk continues to be a pertinent topic for payment providers #issuers #acquirers #insurers that work with these merchants.
