Based on my own experience in the classroom, as well as what I see daily in my current role, this is a time of year for increased off-task behavior. Why? Several reasons: ⭐ Students are much more comfortable with their classmates, and know how to push their buttons! ⭐ Teachers are hyper-focused on upcoming state testing, all of the curriculum left to cover this year, and making it to the next break to take a breath. ⭐ In the hustle-and-bustle, the time spent on proactively setting students up for success gets pushed aside. These are some great resources to support teachers in refocusing students that lead to deeper engagement (which lead to increased academic outcomes!) In one school, the PD day was a choice of different courses liked these, and teachers got to choose where they would do the work - at home or in school! Administrators were able to see that the teachers put in the time, Teachers were super happy to have several choices around their learning, and the conversations that followed were magical! ✨ Whether you are a teacher or an administrator, these courses and/or faculty meeting plans will help you reset student misbehavior and help you get back to engaged student learning!

Leadership begins in Kindergarten with roles for each student. Our favorite is the greeter. He/she introduces themselves to the visitor of their classroom, shares what they’re learning in that moment, and asks the guest if they have any questions. A big task for a 5 year old, but they instantly take the lead. We do this in ALL grades to assist with the first impression/elevator pitch and self-introductions they will be doing their whole life. #SigPrep #SignatureCharterSchools

supporting education events or marketing initiatives without meaningful actions or substance is counterproductive. While events can be a valuable tool for raising awareness and promoting education initiatives, they should be backed by concrete actions and follow-through. Simply talking about education without taking tangible steps to improve it can lead to a sense of disillusionment and mistrust among stakeholders. Education events and marketing efforts should be used as a platform to showcase real progress, highlight achievements, and engage stakeholders in meaningful dialogue. Without actions to back up the rhetoric, these events can feel hollow and disingenuous. In a recent national survey 72% of teachers say they aren't getting the professional development they need to succeed. 🧑🏫 One of my 9 stints as an interim Executive Director over three years was at a bi-lingual Montessori school. I identified that just 40% of the 50 teachers and assistants had actual Montessori certification. In addition, there was no school wide professional development plan in place to ensure the key tenets of Montessori were being implemented with fidelity. Not knowing much about Montessori, I reached out to three experts about how I could help the school short and long term. One Montessori leader shared, “Tom, being a little Montessori is like being a little pregnant.” There was no wonder the school had been decreasing enrollment, over a third of its staff in the last two years and its strong reputation in the community. Creating leaders inside the classroom #NCFSE(2023) What if we expected more from our students? What if we relinquish some of the power to watch our students succeed? Or show them the way to persevere when they fail?   What if our goals in the classroom included leadership development and our curriculum contained an inclusive tone with listed course activities that support professional development? As an educator we can inspire and make them learn how to lead by preparing them for future leaders to feel both empowered and motivated. While values and disposition are sources of motivation to act, acting effectively requires students to have specific capacities. #Cooperation, #teamwork, and #leadership are fundamental capacities for social engagement. Along with the capacities for logical reasoning and problem solving, these capacities are crucial for democratic participation. And these capacities have an #affective (emotional) aspect – which too needs to be addressed. #NCFSE (2023)Pg. 51, 1.3.2. highlighted that with the desirable values and dispositions and equipped with appropriate capacities, it is expected that students will live healthy, independent lives and participate actively in the #community, #economy, #culture, and #democracy. But these values and capacities do not operate in a vacuum; they must be based on a clear understanding of the world. This understanding is gained through the achievement of knowledge in breadth and depth. As a leader of your class, how you nurture this environment in school culture which reflects above values and dispositions on building leaders for tommorrow at each stage of schooling with reference to #Pedagogy and #Assessment...How and Why of learning ? #Foundational Stage for ages 3-8, #Preparatory Stage for ages 8-11, #Middle Stage for ages 11-14, and #Secondary Stage for ages 14-18.
