Opportunities for companies to support marginalised girls in accessing STEM careers Unlocking the untapped potential of marginalised and disadvantaged women and girls to access opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers, the TechnoGirl programme offers several components in which companies can participate: Job Shadowing: This aspect caters to girls in grades 8-12, specifically chosen from quintile 1 to 3 schools. It aims to introduce them to scarce careers in STEM fields such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Post School Mentoring: Designed for beneficiaries who have completed Grade 12, this component provides support for their pursuit of STEM studies at post-schooling institutions and facilitates their access to economic opportunities. Digital Skills: Geared towards unemployed youth, this component focuses on providing training in Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) skills. Over the past year technologies in the Central Valley have faced many challenges. The collapse of Bitwise and industry wide tech layoffs sent ripples through our community, testing our resilience and unity. But, as we've always done, we are turning obstacles into opportunities. Tomorrow at SXSW Edu I have the privilege to share about our remarkable Central Valley community. As I said before, this community is strong, and was never about a single company. Amidst adversity, we've witnessed remarkable achievements that deserve the spotlight. Phillip J. Patiño School of Entrepreneurship continues to nurture young innovators, shaping the future of technology and business. CART continues to stand as a beacon of excellence, merging high school education with real-world applications in science, engineering, and technology. Quiq Labs llc. | Heroes for Hire launching Repo! a new curriculum library looking to help school districts around the nation. Fresno State and UC Merced remain pillars of higher education, driving research, innovation, and community engagement in entrepreneurship and AgTech. Bay Valley Tech - Free Code Academy Apprenticeship Program has stepped into the Fresno community to continue to help bridge the gap between aspiring tech professionals and Silicon Valley's dynamic ecosystem. The creation of Code Rising, a pre-apprenticeship non-profit, marks another significant milestone in our commitment to cultivating a skilled workforce ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board continues to step in and support many displaced technologists find new jobs. Entrepreneurs around our community continue to start boutique agencies and develop products. I've witnessed the expansion of many under the radar software companies like the MBT4 Schools. As I prepare to share our story at the SXSW conference tomorrow, I recognize that many of us in the community are still suffering. However, I am constantly reminded of the power of community and perseverance through small individual wins. I also want to thank the Kapor Center for their unwaivering support and commitment to closing equity gaps. Let's continue to celebrate our wins and support each other. International Women’s Day: Empowering Women in Tech Despite advancements, women remain underrepresented in the tech industry. Here's why encouraging women into tech is crucial and how apprenticeships can serve as a catalyst for their success: Closing the Gender Gap: Only 26% of computing jobs are held by women, according to the National Center for Women & Information Technology, and in 2022/23 only 23% of students enrolled to computer science programs were female. Unlocking Innovation: Research shows that companies with more women in leadership positions achieve higher financial returns.
