Material and industrial process is the focus of second-floor presentations at Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf for this year's Material Matters fair. Free for trade / £15 for public - The fair takes place 18-21 September at Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf on London's Bankside as part of the London Design Festival. #Register to visit here: https://lnkd.in/g__APcse -- Exhibitors include Norsk Hydro showcasing CIRCAL 100R - the world's first industrial-scale aluminium made entirely from recycled post-consumer scrap (one part of the material process pictured). FIBER FUTURES will also be here, revealing insights into cross-industry research and material innovation for high-performance textiles, and illustrating projects that aim to positively impact the textile value chain, including alternative resource streams, innovative spinning techniques, and bio-manufacturing. (Hear Franziska Seehausen talk about the #BIOTEXFUTURE project as part of our talks programme - 3pm, Friday 20 Sept) Alongside is a presentation called Nature’s Canvas from Corian® Design; an immersive experience that highlights the company’s new colour collection and its diverse range of nature-inspired designs in their extraordinary material. Meanwhile, our design studio of the Year, PriestmanGoode, will be exhibiting in Room 8. The studio’s installation, 'Moving Responsibly: A Material Journey' takes visitors on a trip across each phase of their design process, examining issues such as supplier collaborations. It demonstrates how design has the ultimate influence in defining future transport systems that are safe, responsible and sustainable. #MaterialMatters #MM24 #MaterialMatters24 #MaterialMattersFair

paper – the material of tomorrow welcome to the second day of #ANGACOM2024, where we extend a kind invitation to our booth D20 in hall 7. ruwido always does what it says and believes in. being sustainable isn't just about talking, it's about doing real things. this year, like every year before, we're using our booth again instead of making a new one from scratch, which saves valuable materials from the earth. our flooring is woven from the sisal fibres, furniture is handcrafted from water grass, and the walls are made from cardboard. and additionally, instead of glue, we used cornstarch, so not a single drop of chemicals was used to bring our booth to life! #ruwido #productdesign #ecologicaldesign #innovation #sustainability #circulareconomy #remotecontrols #angacom #renewableenergy #CSR #ecovadis #CDP #JAC #accessibility #kreislaufwirtschaft

Join us next week on April 18th for the Biofabrique Vienna Textile Day, where we will explore developments and challenges in material innovation in the #fashion and #textile sector. The use of resources, including the resulting waste products, is playing an increasingly important role, especially in the textile and fashion industry. In addition to #sustainability, circular business models promise new sources of revenue for the textile industry. How will this affect material innovation and production in the future? Experts from fashion and design will be discussing these and other questions at #BiofabriqueVienna: Carolin Schelkle (Atelier LUMA) Miriam Kathrein (Austrian Fashion Association) Antonia Maedel (Rudolf Vienna) Moderation: Alice Jacubasch (Vienna Business Agency) Based on the bioregional design approach of Atelier LUMA, Biofabrique Vienna is developing a method to transform unused local resources into materials for #architecture and #design. During the #KlimaBiennale Wien (April 5 - July 14), we will explore how this concept can be applied to various disciplines in the future. At Textile Day, for example, visitors can learn about innovative manufacturing processes ranging from industrial plant dyeing to creative weaving techniques. Biofabrique Vienna is a pilot project of the Vienna Business Agency and Atelier LUMA, a program of LUMA Arles, in partnership with Vienna University of Technology (Institute of Architectural Design). 💭Some people have a wonderful aptitude for turning worn-out, outdated objects into beautiful, useful pieces. If you give new life to items that could otherwise be thrown away, renovating houses, furniture, or clothing helps reduce waste and preserve heritage. ✨ ➡️ When an artist creates exquisite mosaics from broken tiles or a craftsman transforms an old wooden table into a sleek, contemporary centerpiece, they promote sustainability in addition to creating beauty.♻️ ➡️ Renovating and upcycling encourages ingenuity and creativity, demonstrating that we can make the most of what we already have if we put in the necessary time and effort. ➡️ This strategy pays respect to the past while laying the groundwork for a more sustainable future, making it more than just a passing fad. These artistic endeavors serve as a reminder that ➡️ This practice is more than just a trend; it’s a thoughtful approach that honors the past while paving the way for a more sustainable future. ➡️ These creative acts remind us that beauty and value can be found in what others deem as waste, inspiring others to see the potential in the old and forgotten. What do you think about sustainable practices, re-use and recycling? While I could of course tell you about the comfort and timeless design of our latest product #Mikado, I would rather point to the fact that this product was designed and manufactured with #environmental consciousness being front and center of every step. The result is a great example of how we at #Vitra use #sustainability as an opportunity to re-think everything. As a result, Mikado does not only come with Vitra's above-average quality, but it is completely #modular down to the smallest screw. Nothing is stapled or glued and the chair is made from more than 60% recycled content and is fully recyclable (except for the PU-foam, but we are working on that ;)). This modularity also makes it perfectly suited for circular business models, since it can be easily repaired and is thus inherently made for a very long life in potentially multiple places. Congratulations especially to my colleagues in product development for this outstanding result, Gregor Umbricht. I believe this makes for a perfect example to showcase our environmental mission and how we work every day to get there through the power of #design.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, in collaboration with Aalto University and several Finnish industrial partners, has developed a new packaging material inspired by origami. The technology enables a continuous reel-to-reel folding process for fibre-based cardboard, creating lightweight, durable, and visually distinct packaging. This development offers a sustainable alternative to traditional materials such as plastic and expanded polystyrene. Its properties make it particularly relevant for designers in packaging, product development, and interior applications. we all at ruwido are proud to win iF design awards 2024 for concept f and arolla concept f the product architecture of concept f is made for circularity. genuinely circular economy in the true sense of wording means to give a product a second life without taking any new resources from the planet. the housing of the product is from 50% renewable sources. there is no lacquering, no silicone and in general no chemistry at all. and almost all materials can be reused in a remote with a second life. arolla arolla is maybe the most sustainable electronic product on the planet. why? the housing is carved out of a solid austrian mountain pine tree and the white tactile mechanism is made from bio-based material with cellulose content and even the PCB is made out of paper. therefore the whole product contains nearly no material that cannot be reused in a remote with a second life. the product architecture of the two remote controls guarantees a genuinely circular economy, and with production in austria it also comes with a unique feature: a clean conscience. #designexcellence #sustainabledesign #ifdesignaward #ruwido #productdesign #accessibility #ecologicaldesign #innovation #sustainability #circulareconomy #remotecontrols #renewableenergy #CSR #ecovadis #CDP #JAC #kreislaufwirtschaft

Kudos to 3form for raising the bar on high quality, full recyclable architectural glass and resin products in a recent Barrier to Entry podcast. Andrew Lane and Bobby Bonett chatted with the company's VP of Marketing Karli Slocum about how they are combining mechanical recycling and more sophisticated molecular recycling to produce highly aesthetic materials with no cost premium and a 25% decrease in carbon emissions. Karli explains how mechanical recycling shreds and pelletizes things like bottles, but it can only be done so many times and applications are limited. On the other hand, molecular recycling can take a broader range of plastics, including dies, break down the discarded material to the molecular level, and isolate the components one needs to build a new product. For 3form, this has increased their ability to manufacture products with a high level of clarity and translucency. #recyling #carbonemissions #sustainableesign #interiors #architecture
