An important concept in metrology, or the science of measurement, is measurement uncertainty. Each time we perform a measurement, there is uncertainty in the measurement result. A complete presentation of a measurement result therefore includes the associated uncertainty. The figure relates important terms. The result of the measurement is labeled as the measured value. The true value, which may be different than the measured value and is not known, is also identified. The difference between these two is the error, which we also don’t know. We assign an uncertainty to the measurement based on our engineering knowledge (e.g., manufacturer information) or statistical methods (i.e., repeated measurements). The uncertainty interval encompasses a range of values around the measured value. We believe that the true value lies within the uncertainty interval with a stated level of confidence.
