He explored their innovative responses to the climate crisis, gaining valuable insights: 1️⃣ EarthLab's Initiative: EarthLab is redefining how academia addresses the climate crisis. Combining UW's exceptional research with global community engagement fosters innovative, equitable solutions for climate change. 2️⃣ Innovative Carbon Capture: Banyu Carbon, co-founded by UW Oceanography Professors Alex Gagnon and Julian Sachs, is revolutionizing the cost-effectiveness of carbon removal. This is vital as we transition to a net-zero economy. 3️⃣ Climate Impacts Group's Role: UW's interdisciplinary team is at the forefront of climate adaptation research in the Northwest. They provide critical insights into the regional effects of climate change and guide communities in preparation and adaptation strategies. 4️⃣ Pioneering Research: UW's research is leading the charge in climate action. From devising strategies against extreme heat to studying wildfires' impact on forests and enhancing soil health at UW Farm, their work is pivotal in our battle against climate change. We have 200 billion tons of global carbon budget left to have a chance to hold the 1.5 degree warming limit. In a world that burns 40 billion tons a year, that gives us 5 years. We need to reduce emissions by 7% a year for the next 5 years globally and we're still seeing an increase by up to 1%. Do we really think we can achieve that without controlled #degrowth in certain sunset sectors? Do we really want to let the markets decide that it's OK to spend that remaining budget on private jets and cruise ships and whatever? We have a choice.

The cost of inaction around the #ClimateCrisis is going to almost unbearable in a few years time. We’ve all got to actively examine what action looks like at a micro, meso and macro levels. Individuals, organizations, communities, governments — we all must treat #ClinateAction as urgent. Otherwise, planet Earth 🌍 will collapse under the pressure of carbon emissions and other toxins and we won’t have a place to live in.

The time for action is now - there is no planet B. Together with The Academy of Medical Sciences we are giving a platform to early and mid-career researchers in the US and UK on climate change and health. From clinical perspectives on climate change to the importance of including all communities in the conversation, our bilateral project participants discuss what can be done to tackle one of the world’s most pressing global health challenges, climate change and health. The recent webinar we organized with IF20, titled “Climate Change and the Importance of Indigenous Knowledge,” explored how certain Indigenous/native communities see the well-being and sustainability of the Earth. ♻ 🗣 Dr. Nicole Redvers, Mr. Tafue M Lusama, Ms. Elvira Rumkabu and Dr. George Carter highlighted diverse climate sciences that were developed by these communities and examined how this knowledge and spiritualities could complement reports from the scientific community. 💬 What are your thoughts on this important issue? Will you be satisfied with business as usual? When it comes to climate science, indifference is the least profitable outcome for our shared planet.
