High School summer opportunities are important, but you don’t need to pay-to-play.    Colleges like to see students develop their skills by challenging themselves. Participation in summer endeavors demonstrate a student’s motivation and productivity.    Many families end up spending a significant amount of money on summer college courses, adventures abroad, or even research opportunities for their students. While each of these have merit, they are often only accessible to families with disposable income. This is why getting a job will be just as impressive to admissions officers. Real world work experiences such as a cashier, a camp counselor, lifeguard,  or an unpaid internship help students develop and improve life skills such as: problem solving skills,  team building skills, leadership instincts, interpersonal communication skills, creativity, and more.  By participating in all kinds of summer opportunities, including summer jobs, students are demonstrating their drive and willingness to learn.  And that’s what counts! #collegeadmissions #collegecounseling #collegeplanning

As the educational needs change for students, so does our society and our underlying work values. Our young students have different learning needs and wants. Educators must adapt and consider new ways of teaching and to give credits in creative ways to produce our best possible future. “Here are a few ways higher education can innovate to get students ready for careers: Turn the college curriculum upside-down. Let students take classes in a career-focused major in their first year of college, instead of waiting until their third year to start a major. This allows a student to get a meaningful internship in year one and potentially do 6-10 internships over four years.Give credit for career experiences that students gain outside the classroom, such as through paid, full-time positions in industry, also known as co-ops. Have students complete valuable industry credentials at the beginning of their college careers, instead of after graduation, so they can learn and earn. Help students build the social capital they need to build relationships with professionals, do informational interviews and secure career opportunities.” #collegesanduniversities #educationreformt #lifeexperience #workexperience

As a higher education professional interested in student financial, nutritional, and educational security, I cannot overstate the importance of funds like this one! "The Twardowski Career Development Center established The Fund for Unpaid Internships on a simple premise. A student should never have to turn down an internship and the experience, skills, networking, mentorship, and access it can provide because of a financial barrier. However, there are students who cannot afford to pursue unpaid internships, even though they provide a wealth of experience, or in some cases, are required for their field of interest. There are rippling effects to not doing an internship that can follow students well into post-graduation. Research suggests that an internship on a resume increases a student’s chance of getting called for an interview. Beyond that, according to data from WCU’s first destination survey, students who completed internships reported starting salaries just over an average of $5,000 more compared to students who hadn’t completed internships. In addition, a student not having the ability to test an industry or job function of interest puts them at greater risk for making a less informed decision about their post-graduate plans... "

With only two out of three internships offering compensation at four-year colleges, and even fewer at two-year institutions, it’s clear that students face significant barriers. Another thought for #Childlifeinternship coordinators in the week before #OFFERWEEK: As a faculty member at #BankStreetCollegeofEducation, I assist students in preparing for fieldwork and internships. In the past, I have advised them that hospital Child Life teams look for a "good fit" when evaluating potential candidates. However, in light of the growing awareness of racial and ethnic diversity disparities within our field and the unique needs of neurodivergent learners, I am questioning whether this approach is still appropriate. In our polarized world, barriers are broken down when we open ourselves to different points of view, backgrounds, language styles, and temperaments. Maybe the next best intern isn't the one who fits in, but the one who challenges your team to grow and engage in courageous conversations. Please consider this while making your final decisions about what is good for your team.

TLDR: College internships make a huge difference in the post-college prospects of many students. Let's all agree that we should pay interns a decent wage so that internships aren't only accessible for the affluent. A great WSJ article about Gen Z interest in skilled trade careers (e.g., welding) led me down a rabbit hole of reading about the successes and challenges of recent college graduates. A relevant section here: "Securing even one internship during college significantly improves the odds of landing a college-level job upon graduation, according to the study. For humanities and psychology majors, the rate of underemployment five years after college dropped by a quarter with an internship. Among social-sciences majors, it fell by 40%." Internships work. Paid internships make internships accessible. P.S. I'm proud to say that Radion Health pays its interns $25/hour. It isn't too late to apply.

Paid Student Diversity Internships Announcement Deadline: Monday February 26 11:59pm Details here, link below: The Bureau of Equity and Inclusion is excited to announce the open application period for the 2024 State of Wisconsin Student Diversity Internship Program (SWSDIP)! This year, we offer 262 paid positions across 179 unique job openings, with opportunities in 38 Wisconsin counties, including several completely remote internships. The average hourly rate of pay across the program is around $18/hour. Eligible students will receive an email with instructions within a few days. 3.   Once you are determined eligible, access the link provided with your application ID, select the positions, and complete the information for each position chosen. 4.   After selecting positions and answering the required questions, submit the positions. The application period will close on Monday, February 26, at 11:59 pm. Interns should expect to hear from the state agencies they applied to by mid-March 2024, for interviews. AV Club was pleasantly surprised (and slightly alarmed) to get 150 applicants for our summer Apprentice Program. Our original plan was to short-list 5 candidates, but due to the volume of quality candidates, we’re interviewing 18 people. Ok, so why the LinkedIn post? Well, we’re going to hire 2 apprentices. Which means we can’t hire 16 of them. But you can. We also now have a large database of students still looking for summer internships. Want some recommendations? We’ve got them. And if you’re on the fence about hiring interns this summer, please consider doing it. Or, if you have a program in place, please consider adding a few more spots. There are generous government wage subsidies available to take the edge off. Take it from us, there are so many talented students looking for opportunities to get into our industry. And most of them are struggling. However, their level of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit is absolutely incredible. It’s a shame. We all received a helping hand at some point in our careers.
