Meet our newest team member Saswat Hota from Sambalpur Odissa. Saswat's #MyFirst experience in the field took him to a small pathology lab on the outskirts of Sambalpur. During this visit, Saswat saw firsthand how Erba Transasia is transforming rural healthcare. We're thrilled to share the impactful strides made by Udyogini in collaboration with Indigo CSR, transforming the landscape of Dewas, Madhya Pradesh. In a region marred by deep-seated patriarchy, Udyogini's relentless efforts are making waves in women's empowerment through the Potato Value Chain Project. Through the formation of Women Enterprise Groups (WEGs), regular meetings, and specialized trainings, we've paved the path for economic diversification. The establishment of a chips production unit stands tall as a beacon of progress, opening new avenues for farmer incomes. Exposure visits to chip production facilities and organic farm melas have ignited a spirit of innovation and knowledge exchange among our women. The ripple effect is palpable, with initial observations revealing a remarkable uptick of approximately 35% in the adoption of value-added agricultural practices and a notable increase of approximately 20% in market access. Empowered by these initiatives, women in WEGs are finding their voices and forging ahead on the path to economic and social prosperity. Our country often reveals its contrasts—on one end, people enjoy seamless access to resources, while on the other, those in remote areas struggle to meet basic needs and pacify themselves with what little they have. Talking of remote places, Kukkoo conducted a biodegradable pad and period comic distribution and period awareness campaign in Husepur Village in Padra Taluka in Vadodara. 🩸🌱📚👩🏽🏫 Similar to our previous campaigns, these are our observations of our campaign site: 🩸 Hysterectomy is extremely common there, due to the belief that eliminating periods for life would make it easier to manage the demands of heavy farm labor. 🩸Tragically, two women died due to period-related issues, highlighting the dire need for open conversations about menstrual health. 🩸 Gathering women for our session was extremely challenging, but our resilient volunteers visited every household, explaining the importance of period education. This effort led to 48 women and girls from 60 households attending our session in the village's only primary school. While going to these househids we noticed caste-based housing divisions. 🩸 Despite initial hesitation and giggles when mentioning 'period,' some women appreciated our efforts, understanding the importance of attending this period-ed session for the sake of their health. The lack of organized transport meant hitchhiking was our only option to commute from the village. -> Overall, evaluating the impact of our efforts on our beneficiaries' menstrual health and debunking their inherent period taboos makes our efforts feel truly worthwhile. It brings us great joy to know that we've sparked conversations around periods in this village and this fuels us with encouragement to persist our efforts since so much needs to be done and so many need to be served. None of this could be possible if it weren't for our volunteers. The chain of habit is very soft. You only feel it when you want to break free from it and realize that it has shackled you. In the session on "The Power of Habits", we discussed how it is not so important to focus on your bad habit as it is to identify what habit you are replacing it with. Param Drstva Nivartate, "higher purpose will remove the lower taste (bad habits) easily." I shared my perspective on the "Model of the five-horse chariot" where intelligence is higher than the mind, and the mind is higher than the senses. We get trapped because our senses and mind take charge of us. Through enthusiasm, determination, and patience, we will be able to change our habits. Initially, it might seem like poison, but in the end, it will be nectar. My prayers and best wishes go to all the participants. As the chair of the #wellbeing Employee Resource Group (ERG) at Novartis #hyderabad, my team's main goal is to #inspire our team to embrace a holistic and balanced lifestyle. Recently, a close colleague and friend, Sunil Sachdeva, asked me to deliver a short keynote during his session on "The Power of Habits." I must confess, I haven't read the books "The Power of Habits" or "Atomic Habits." So, what I shared was purely based on my own experiences. Here's a practical habit tip I shared: every habit consists of underlying rituals. For instance, my routine involves preparing gym clothes the day before, ensuring my bike is clean for any planned rides, and scheduling dedicated gym time. Exercise is the ultimate goal, but it's the rituals that fosters habit persistence. At Novartis, ERGs are the voluntary networks linking our employees who have shared backgrounds, interests, experiences and perspectives. ERGs make the unique aspects of diversity and inclusion more tangible to everyone and contribute to the development of our talent and to a culture of curiosity and empowerment.
