We are hiring our first in-house Creative Director. The below are some of the central beliefs of how we do creative at Yoco, if they resonate with you, then perhaps you will love leading the team who brings them to life: Challenge the norm We are a challenger brand, we inspire entrepreneurs to see passed the BS of how other brands portray and market to entrepreneurs. Our creative should challenge the norm. If something is a category norm, we should relentlessly pursue the opposite. Authenticity always Being authentic is central to what differentiates us. Our authenticity stems from the fact we understand the challenges of building a business. Authenticity means our advertising isn’t always happy. It's real. Offer hope, use emotion Running a business is incredibly hard. We won’t sugarcoat it. But we will always offer hope. We believe that the best and most effective marketing has emotion at the centre. Aim for extraordinary Creating in the minds of our customers an extraordinary brand requires doing things in extraordinary ways. We are aiming for firsts and we don’t need to be perfect or nail it every time. Fresh consistency, not consistent freshness Building an iconic brand means investing in distinctive and ownable assets and a clear and consistent voice. We believe in the power of fresh consistency, and know that the first people who get tired of our ideas is us. Apply here 👇

Am looking for a smart, curious young mind for part time work (with the potential to turn into full time). It is entry-level work typical of an early stage venture, a little bit of customer support, a bit of marketing, a bit of sales, a lot of everything. Tons of learning opportunities, lots of tenacity and grit required. What non-traditional routes have people in my network used (in a South African context) to find great people for an opportunity like this?

I have always been a religious user of the Eisenhower Matrix to prioritise my daily work, but it kinda falls over when you don't have someone to delegate to. So (I think) I am in the market for a virtual assistant. If you have had real experience with one, please let me know the impact it has had on your productivity, and if you know a great one, hit me a DM or comment 🙏

Back in 2017 I walked into a small payments startup called Yoco in Cape Town with no intention of staying more than six months. After spending many years marketing sport and beer, the prospect of spending my days obsessing over payments to small businesses simply didn’t hold much appeal. But it took me exactly two days of spending time with Yoco’s incredible and diverse customer base for me to realise that this was so much more than a payments company, and so much more than credit card machines. By being the connection point between buyer and seller in a moment of exchange, Yoco was playing a vital role in an underserved sector of the economy. Shining a light on the stories of South African small business became the obsession. Fast forward more than six and a half years, and at the end of January I left Yoco after a joyous, wild ride of growth. I could have stayed forever, which is exactly why I knew I had to leave. This is a gratitude post to everyone I worked with during my time at Yoco. The founders - Katlego, Carl, Lungi and Brad - from whose sheer determination the business was built and continues to grow, my colleagues, agencies and freelancers who helped make the magic, and the hundreds of thousands of customers from whom the magic came. On my last day I stole a keepsake from the wall, a photograph taken in our first brand campaign that encapsulates both the Yoco brand, and its customers. This now lives on my wall and is what helps inspire my own entrepreneurial journey. I have no idea where my current exploration will head, but fortune favours the brave.
