Wendy, a pharmacy technician (pictured) 💊 attended our monthly Broomfield Hospital staff engagement forum. She told me about how much she loves her job, but also the daily challenges she faces. I promised to come onto the wards and shadow her so I could get a better understanding of what she was telling me. Today I shadowed Wendy and also talked to her pharmacy colleagues. Allowing Wendy to show me how she worked really brought to life what she had told me in the staff engagement forum, it will also allow me to support where I am able. I always enjoy going onto the wards, the professionalism and compassion Wendy showed with her patients was completely aligned to our Trust Values (Excellence, Compassion, Respect). I had a lovely chat with one of her patients and, of course, I asked about their experience of Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust 🏥 I was really encouraged by what they told me: ‘Your teams have communicated really well at every step so I know exactly what is happening’ 👏🏾 For me, taking the time to shadow staff is extremely valuable in building my understanding, and giving real context to issues, it also allows me to get direct feedback 🗣️ from our patients. #pharmacy #pharmacytechnician #pharmacist #medication #hospital #nhs #healthcare #patient #patientexperience #health #care #nhstrust #nhsengland #healthcareleadership #nhsmanagement

The job list that keeps me organised Now I know not everyone will benefit from this template, and some do just fine writing on a blank sheet of paper but I'm a headless chicken without it, especially on long days and on-call shifts. So for those of you who operate similarly, feel free to save this or send me a message and I will send you a pdf for better quality. Thanks to medical students and foundation doctors who have given their feedback, I have made some useful changes to the template. Examples of how I used it on an on-call shift: Do now - r/v pt x - BP 210/103 - K+ 7.2 - NEWS 5, increased O2 requirements Decide when - discharge letter - maintenance fluids - cannula for Abx - post-op analgesia r/v - prescribe regular meds - micro discussion Delegate (I only tend to do this if I am swamped. The nurses are very lovely but please don't take advantage. If my colleagues offer to help with jobs I also put it here to remember to confirm whether they've been done) - routine bloods - order CT or other specialist scan (hospital policy requires a senior doctor) - prep discharge summary Hope this helps! #doctors #clinicians #nhs #healthcare #productivity #juniordoctor #residentdoctor #foundationdoctor #medicine

Ajay Sindwani Reconnecting with childhood friends, Archna and Ajay, brought back so many fun stories and cherished moments from years past. We shared countless laughs, reminiscing about the many people we’ve known for so long and the unforgettable stories we've collected along the way. As a pharmacist, this connection reminded me of the universal importance of kindness, care, and enduring relationships—not just in our personal lives, but in every aspect of healthcare. Whether as pharmacists, doctors, nurses, or any healthcare professional, the relationships we build with patients, teams, and communities form the foundation of compassionate, effective care. These friendships serve as a powerful reminder that empathy, trust, and human connection are at the core of all healthcare fields and essential to improving both patient outcomes and the well-being of the entire healthcare environment. #PatientCare #HealthcareProfessionals #CompassionateCare #KindnessInHealthcare #Empathy #HumanConnection #Pharmacy #HealthcareCommunity #BuildingRelationships"

“I don’t agree…” “I don’t understand why…” “Instead, have we tried…” “What about…” “But that doesn’t make sense…” Have you ever been that one person in the room who has a burning question but is too scared to speak up? Have you ever been that unpopular opinion? As a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), I know that feeling all too well. But I've learned that challenging the status quo is where true growth and innovation begin. Every day, I step out of my comfort zone to advocate for better patient care, improved protocols, and more effective treatments. It's not always easy, and sometimes it feels like you're swimming against the current, but pushing boundaries is how we make real, lasting changes happen. Being the one to ask the tough questions, to propose new ideas, and to stand up when others sit down takes courage. But it's this bravery that drives progress in healthcare and beyond. Whether it's suggesting a new approach in a team meeting or advocating for a patient, every small act of courage counts. #drivingchange #clinicalnursespecialist #cns #aprn #changeagent #daretolead #daretochallengestatusquo #askthequestion #betheunpopularopinion #standup #inspirechange #empower

MANAGING HIGH VOLUME IN THE HOSPITAL PHARMACY: STRATEGIES FOR PHARMACIST A day in the life of a hospital pharmacist can indeed be challenging, especially during peak hours or emergency situations. As a hospital pharmacist, you may face situations where multiple patients, nurses, and orderlies arrive simultaneously, increasing the risk of medication errors. Medication errors are a serious issue, impacting a significant number of people and resulting in substantial costs. Strategies Include: 1. Implement a queue system: Assign to each patient a unique identification number, designate a waiting area where patients can sit and be called when it's their turn. This will help to: - Reduced congestion - Improved patient satisfaction - Enhanced efficiency - Reduced anxiety and frustration - Better organization and productivity 2. Provide engaging and informative resources in the pharmacy to educate patients while they wait: Types of Materials: - Brochures on medications, health conditions, and wellness - Posters highlighting pharmacy services and promotions - Digital displays with interactive health content - Infographics on medication safety and adherence - Flyers on disease management and prevention 3. Engage patients: Acknowledge waiting patients, assure them you'll attend to them shortly, and offer updates on wait times. Verbal Cues:* -"Hello, I'll be with you shortly." -"Your wait time will be approximately [X] minutes." - "I apologize for the delay; I'll attend to you soon 4. Nurse requisition management: For non-emergency requests, ask nurses to return later for pickups, ensuring a focused workspace. 5. Prioritize emergencies: Attend to urgent nurse requests, informing waiting patients of the temporary delay. 6. Clear workspace: - Keep your workspace clutter-free and well-organized. - Avoid overcrowding with excessive medications or supplies. - Focus on one patient at a time to ensure accuracy. - Prioritize a "clean desk" policy to reduce visual distractions. 7. Maintain a calm environment: Ensure the pharmacy remains quiet and orderly, minimizing distractions. Note: Hospital management must also prioritize sufficient pharmacy staffing to prevent burnout, ensuring: - Patient safety - Streamlined operations - Minimized medication errors Stay focused, calm, and effective, even in the midst of chaos. Your expertise and care make a difference in patients' lives. Wishing you a productive, stress-free, and fulfilling week ahead! 😊 #HospitalPharmacy #PharmacyOperations #MedicationErrors #PatientCare #PharmacyStaffing #HospitalManagement

Rachael Young, formerly Rachael Nesselrodt, has been a real HV all-star for many years. She has helped us establish procedures, train new hires and get HV's Case management to where it is today. She clearly loves and cares for all her patients and clients and brings a high level of professionalism to her work everyday, a real testament to what we call "The HV Way". You might be wondering, how does HV Handle Case management? We'll tell you! When an employee experiences an injury or illness, they call our 24/7 hotline. An operator answers the call to gather general information, and our nursing staff is promptly notified to follow up. Our nurses then contact the employee to collect detailed information about the incident. Based on the situation, a treatment plan is developed. This may include first aid instructions, scheduling telemedicine appointments with our doctors, or coordinating care with clinics or ERs as needed. We can also order diagnostic tests directly, reducing the need for clinic visits and helping to keep costs and recordable incidents down. If external treatment is required, we can request medical records to ensure proper follow-up care. We continue to monitor and support the employee until they recover. Clients receive detailed reports, giving them all necessary documentation for their records. Additionally, we are available to answer questions about workers' compensation, injuries, or illnesses. For new projects or companies, we vet clinics, hospitals, dentists, eye doctors, and therapeutic massage providers to ensure a clear plan is in place for external care when needed. Our service operates 24/7, including holidays and weekends, providing consistent and comprehensive support. #EmployeeHealth #WorkplaceSafety #InjuryManagement #24HourSupport #Telemedicine #OccupationalHealth #WorkersCompensation #HealthAndSafety #InjuryCare #EmployeeWellbeing #CostSavings #OnTheJobCare #FirstAidSupport #WorkplaceInjuries #RecoverySupport

Last evening, I SAVED A PATIENT’S LIFE. Not via CPR or First Aid. But, just by USING MY PHONE! If you like Grey’s Anatomy or House MD you might like reading this! Here’s the story- *Disclaimer!* Story Modified for patient/caregiver privacy & adherence to healthcare & privacy legislation. A patient’s kin called reporting that the patient had a certain kind of swelling in one of the areas in the HNF (Head, neck & face) region and was continuously urging that the patient be cared for at home. After thoroughly going through the history and patient chart, I understood that it was a serious post-op complication. (Owing to my clinical expertise as working as a dentist for 5+ years). I used some of my go-to communication strategies, explained the kin why was the swelling not normal, also walked her through a few steps of protocol she most likely will have to follow and convinced the patient’s kin to immediately go to the nearest ER. Note that this kin of the patient was confused, upset and also borderline apprehensive to even go to any facility at the beginning of the call. I also coordinated with all staff involved in direct and indirect care of the patient to ensure closed loop communication. I learned these things about myself yesterday : 🩺 I am efficient enough to use my clinical expertise from back home to find solutions in a non-clinical healthcare setting. 🩺 Communication strategies are the number one tool you can use to enhance patient engagement and experience. 🩺 Even in frontline non clinical role, my expertise and skills matter. 🩺 I am contributing majorly to the healthcare system though I am currently not working as a doctor or nurse. All you internationally trained HCPs out there, This one’s for you! #internationalHCPs #healthcare #healthcareprofessionals #clinical #nonclinical #frontlinestaff
