When times are good, you should be marketing. When times are tough, you MUST be marketing. Brands that increase their marketing efforts during a recession, while competitors are cutting back, can improve market share and achieve a higher return on investment at a lower cost compared to during prosperous times. The only way to navigate slower periods is to market your way out.
