Excellent article on how to manage high achievers, everyone’s favorite employee to hire, but difficult to manage… Failing forward is an important concept. No one likes losing, especially those who are used to seeing their name in the lights consistently. Reframing a failed operation as a ‘learning opportunity’ is a great way to maintain a positive mental attitude. It’s a good self-reflection exercise too, for those who are high achievers themselves.

I’ve been a ‘power user’ of SFDC since 2013, participating in the implementation and deployment, the Classic to Lightning conversion, and used APIs for my own personal use. I’m starting to deploy my own SFDC instance, just so I have a better understanding of the platform. As I was making minor mods last night, I was reminded not to get too far until I create a documentation trail. When building a process or system, documentation is critical. Especially if there was an issue that drives a new change, be sure to document the cause/effect of the issue and what was done to fix it. And, apply the simplest solution possible. Sometimes it’s not the fastest, but nobody likes to walk into a network closet and find a rat’s nest.

LinkedIn Family, I’m reaching out to share some unexpected news: as of today, my role at PrimePay has been eliminated. I joined PrimePay just four short months ago, taking on the challenge of leading the partner team with hefty goals to drive revenue. One initiative I launched was set to be a major contributor, potentially driving upwards of 40% of their revenue goals through partner collaboration. I’m currently studying for the CISM exam, so I pay attention to regulatory impacts far more than before. So, thought I’d share something I found very interesting that many GRC experts are likely tracking: Currently, the California legislature is evaluating whether to assign AI model responsibility/liability to the user or the dev team. It’s a philosophical extension of the discussion started earlier this year, whether social media is a platform or publisher. Innovation always brings regulation and for good reason: It’s important for stakeholders to know where their liability starts and ends, and where their 3rd party risk needs to be scrutinized. I’m sure employee handbooks will need to be updated, either way. If you can’t use a company photocopier to make copies in support of a political movement, can you ‘borrow’ corporate’s AI model to write a trendy article in support of a candidate? The short answer is ‘no, it’s a company resource.’ But do you let workers check their Facebook page from a company device? What does the employee hand book say about personal internet usage? There are a lot of hard decisions ahead. For philosophical context, we might reference the debates from BYOD, giving employees public internet access from corporate networks, etc. There’s nothing new under the sun, just old problems in new subscriptions.
The most interesting thing in tech: California's controversial AI regulation bill has moved out of the Senate Appropriations Committee and will soon be up for a full vote. At core it shifts the burden of regulation from users of AI technology to the makers of AI technology. If AI leads to some catastrophic outcome, the burden of responsibility will be on the makers of the large AI models. They also have to submit to audits and build kill switches so that their models can be shut down. Many in the technology industry—particularly the open source community—have fought hard against the law, which led to many provisions being changed in the past week. Still, even as currently written, it will be one of the most significant pieces of AI legislation in the country if it passes.
