Did you know that the LEGO brick is a protected Intellectual Property? The interlocking design of the LEGO brick, a cornerstone of the LEGO toy system, is protected by a type of IP called registered design. If you’re in product, you will likely consider this part of your business strategy. A registered design protects your product’s unique appearance, whether physical or digital, granting you the ownership right to control its use. This is distinct from copyright, which protects original artistic work without registration, and utility patents, which safeguard the technical functions of a product. 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐲𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐬. Registered Design gives you the rights to the unique use of how you present your product. The important thing to note about this type of IP is that it must be registered PRIOR to your product launch. Here are some famous examples: ✨ Fashion: Crocs’ unique shape or Love & Co’s jewellery designs ✨ Technology: Apple’s iPod design or XBox gaming controllers Registered Design also allows you to monetise your Design by licensing it to third parties or selling it outright. I am slowly going to reveal more of my true passion on LinkedIn. First off, LEGO® is a trademark of the LEGO Group of companies which does not sponsor, authorize or endorse this post, nor anything else that I do. That said... I am deeply engulfed by the community and creativity of LEGO-brick-building. This 'realm' that I find myself in is commonly described as a hobby, or a fanaticism, or dismissed as a quirky luxury of an immature modern adult. While these attributes might all be true for some, I have surpassed them and taken my passion to new heights. I will discuss this all going forward. None of them are uncharted waters, I am far from the first person to fall so deeply down the brick-built rabbit hole, but I am here to tell you a little about my efforts along the way. Firstly, I operate a digital storefront on the Bricklink service which offers clients an enormous selection of LEGO Elements (currently just under 155,000 parts). The 'store' takes up about 1/3rd of my entire basement. I have thousands of drawers, hundreds of bins, packing material, sorting tables... it is a considerable investment in time and money. I love it! My inventory is primarily brand-new, 'unclutched' bricks. Aimed at the discerning customer who only will settle for the best. I package my goods with care and attention. I ship my orders with care and expediency. With over 450 orders across North America in the past two years, I have 100% positive feedback. When it comes to character products for babies, we often find that prints and colours can be a bit too harsh. We love how Marks and Spencer and BABY MORI LIMITED are interpreting characters in their collections. Their approach is truly inspirational, setting the bar high for anyone creating or licensing characters. It's a testament to the power of thoughtful design in the baby product space.
