Today has been an eventful day for Recess Labs and I'm here reflecting on some major lessons learned. I'd like to share these insights from a founder's perspective:
**1. Access Matters**
Today, I had the opportunity to pitch Recess to 18 executives Blue Cross Blue Shield for a pilot. Without Prosper HealthTech Accelerator advocating and opening doors for founders as core obective, we would not have gotten this opportunity. For smaller ecosystem builders, you must strive to open doors and find these key connections to see any measurable outcomes. We need it… we need to democratize access and opportunities, it’s the only way to drive inclusivity.
**2. Location Matters**
I also was invited to be on TechBirmingham ‘s panel on the future of healthcare innovation. One of the questions from the panel “Why Birmingham?" Truth is innovating in health is hard af! It can take 1-2 years from research to commercialization, followed by 12- 18 month sales cycles to close deals with hospitals and health systems. However, Birmingham is doubling down on its strengths, creating a space for healthcare innovators to move from 0 to 1 and even from 1 to 2. Founders, find the place, the people, and the environment that understand your vision. Sometimes, it’s not your product—it’s your location.
**3. Community Matters**
At the end of the day, for founders, especially CEOs of startups, it gets lonely. It feels like you're carrying so much weight alone. For me sitting with Paolo Alejandro Catilo and Patricia Kelly Marsh, MD debriefing the day, was just as valuable as meeting with the executives. So much perspective, insight and cross insight. We need more of that.
**4. Economics Matter**
I'll echo Ethan Summers on this one: it’s all about outcomes and cost!! Know the value you bring and tie it into the economic benefits. Today, during my pitch at Blue Cross Blue Shield, the key questions were about the reduction of claims and the reduction in time off how is it quantified . According to Ethan, outcomes and costs are all that matter.
To all builders, keep pushing boundaries, find your supportive community, and always tie your vision to clear economic benefits. To all ecosystem builders and investors let’s continue to open doors, build strong communities, and champion the economic impact of innovation!
