As I am sure we are all aware, environmental work is never truly finished. The work that environmental engineers, geologists, and scientists do, not only has a great effect on the earth but also on our own well-being. This article explains how a study is being done to see just how early environmental factors impact us. "'As the largest U.S. study ever conducted on children’s health, ECHO has the power to transform our understanding of how the early environment shapes our health.'" #environmentalimpact #environmentalprotection

ECLIPS FUNDING ANNOUNCED Funding has been announced for the pilot phase of the Elevated Childhood Lead Interagency Prevalence Study (ECLIPS). This will test a new microsampling method in the real world. If successful, this could lead to a national survey of blood lead concentrations in children. The survey may provide evidence to remove one of the barriers to screening in the UK and prompt the government to do something to prevent lead poisoning. However, we should not wait. Estimates suggest that 200,000 to 300,000 UK children have lead poisoning today. We have to fix this. https://lnkd.in/etH33bbV

New publication from Buccinilab This original peer-reviewed publication was led by our doctoral student Amanda Castelo Saragosa, MPH in collaboration with Dr. Flatt, PhD, MPH. This publication describes a relatively low-burden process that we used to engage our Maternal–Child West Las Vegas Community Advisory Board (WLV‐CAB) to co-create implementation strategies to inform a multi-level intervention to address maternal-child food insecurity in the first 1,000 days: https://lnkd.in/gJ-DpCn9 Key messages: ✔️ Our study advanced the science of co‐creation in the maternal-child field, which are critical to increase interventions' feasibility, acceptability, and ownership. ✅Using a concept mapping activity & consensus building process, our community advisory board (CAB) identified seven thematic areas for addressing maternal‐child food insecurity. 🔍The co‐creation of a culturally sensitive intervention to address maternal‐child food insecurity requires multi‐level strategies across community, service, and families levels. Thanks to Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) for the funding support.

In collaboration with the University of Virginia School of Medicine and School of Nursing and with generous support from the University of Virginia Office for Sustainability and Environmental Institute the University of Virginia School of Nursing presents: 2024 Protecting Health in a Changing Climate: Rising Heat and Health in Virginia. Date: April 13, 2024 Time: 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM (ET) This conference addresses how the warming climate is changing heat-related illness patterns and health. The incidence of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and burn injury are rising, and warmer temperatures also increase the risk for hospitalizations related to other chronic conditions, including underlying heart disease, asthma, COPD, and kidney problems. Many commonly prescribed medications also increase the risk for adverse health outcomes when coupled with warmer temperatures. Warmer temperatures are also associated with climate-related anxiety and depression, and may also increase violence, crime, and suicide. This conference will help you protect health, particularly for vulnerable communities and populations, through knowledge of evaluation and management of heat-related illness and will also help you advocate for policies that protect individuals, families, and communities from rising temperatures.
