I went to have lunch with a couple of friends. They have recently moved to the country. 🏠 The view from their house was amazing! I was standing on their lush green grass 🌿🍃 looking into a paddock with 10 full size goats, six pygmy goats, two donkeys, and one sheep all in together. A lovely sight to see... Protecting all these beautiful animals was the wonderful Hugo who is a Maremma breed of dog. I was watching how protective he was of his tribe. ✔️👏 There was a solid wooden fence between us to protect and keep all parties separate. As soon as our two dogs 🐕 approached the fence, Hugo barked and took his tribe away from the perceived danger (us and our dogs). Our friend was telling us how Hugo rounds up his tribe (big and small) at the end of each day and herds them into a large shed, so they are out of danger for the night. He does this without any instruction. Such initiative from this wonderful dog! This is Hugos sole purpose in life - to protect his tribe. ✅ This got me thinking about the importance of purpose in our lives. Knowing your purpose gives you clear direction not only in your life, your business, and your job, but often it drives you along the path to success. 💯 For me, it is the reason I jump out of bed every day, excited to see what adventures are instore for me. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲, 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲. 𝗔 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲. What I have found is, being out of my comfort zone is where I create expansion and growth in my life. 📈🚀 The other thing that struck me about Hugo was he looked content in the paddock with his flock. He did not once hesitate what course of action he was going to take. Dogs I believe have a deep knowing. My dogs know when I’m approaching home even before they hear the car. How cool is that! 🤗 I believe having purpose under pins everything we do. It is a reason for being. Hugo demonstrated this very clearly. Do you know what your purpose is? Mr Buddy and his family are maturing the Balanced Doghouse way! His youthful exuberance sometimes gets the better of him. How do you explain "belonging" to an organization? Today I talked with our team at the Missouri SBDC at UMKC and UMKC Innovation Center about Pride Month and Belonging. (the two have a lot in common!) I started with this Sesame Street classic and then went to Missy Elliot where we "flipped it and reversed it". It's easier to talk about what "belonging" is NOT. We all know the feeling we get in an environment where we don't feel like we belong. The team wrote down words that described how they felt. Words like: ostracized, lonely, insufficient, self-conscious, disappointed, challenged, and many more. Then we talked about the things people in the group often say when you express a feeling of not belonging. Things like. "Of course you do!" or "Everyone's welcome here!" or "You're being too sensitive." and more. All of these statments are dismissive and only further illustrate the point that you don't belong. We talked about the phrase "Everyone's welcome" and how many places use some form of that phrase, yet everyone knows when they aren't welcome. What do you feel like when you know you belong? Safe, warm, vulnerable, open, welcomed, relaxed, and more. What will you do differently to ensure that your environments make everyone feel like they belong? https://lnkd.in/gdiXN2hF

I took part in my first proper agility competition this weekend with my rescue dog Buddy. It was a weekend of 'firsts'. First time using our caravan in 'off grid' mode. First time in such big arenas, first time among so many (hundreds of other dogs and large crowds of people). Sadly no firsts for us in terms of prizes, not even a clear round as we were eliminated in every run. Did Buddy care? Nope, he had the best time and got his tennis ball reward at the end of each run. Our elimations were down to small errors (mine not his) and I've learned about the areas we need to work on together. Buddy coped brilliantly and fearlessly in a strange environment, he calmly sat and waited for my command to move off the start line and mostly followed my commands when going round. This is from a dog who at 18 months was nearly put to sleep for being 'reactive'. https://lnkd.in/e7hj7W_V I was reflecting that there's a lot I can take from my experience this weekend into everyday life. Failure isn't a bad thing if you learn from it. Failing in front of a crowd isn't so bad, others failed too and being supportive and encouraging when people fail goes a long way. Not being afraid to try again and building resilience is important. If you're having fun along the way that's the best experience of all. #bemorebuddy **Update, after I posted this we did one last run in the steeplechase competition. Nailed it!! Only went and won the class in our height. If at first you don't succeed...**

I love dogs. As well as a #MedComms Consultant and #ExecutiveCoach I also have a bit of a side hustle looking after friends’ and family’s dogs from time to time. (As well as my own two Labradors.) When they stay with me, while I ask for specific instructions (for example, my brother’s golden retrievers aren’t allowed upstairs, and I abide by that rule when they are with me) the guest dogs fit into my (and my dogs’) routine. They may need some time to get used to it, but they do, and they always settle very well. And I love having them to stay. My point? Dogs, like their humans, have their own routines – and habits. With change, repetition, consistency and encouragement is all that is needed to form new habits to become the new norm. When they arrive with me, the dogs might not know where the ‘treat box’ is, but they certainly do by the time they leave. I'll leave it up to you to interpret who I am referring to here as the "old dog"... but for those of you who like a film reference - from When Harry Met Sally "Is one of us a dog in this scenario...?"
