The #GCP is a collaboration between the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development & One Planet network - 10YFP, hosted by the UN Environment Programme. We're committed to guiding businesses in transitioning from a linear to a circular economy through strategic workstreams and robust stakeholder engagement. This Landscape Analysis is the first output from the GCP's Workstream 1, for which Deloitte and Circle Economy Consulting are providing ongoing technical support. 'Despite the growing popularity of the circular economy concept, global circularity is steadily declining. We are now at a critical juncture where uniform measurement is essential. How to generate a positive impact on your business?💡🌎 The study (i) mapped what high impact research on #circularity indicators and #circulareconomy actions is reporting; (ii) pointed out challenges and opportunities in the application of circularity #indicators; and (iii) discussed implications for #businesses wanting to generate #positiveimpacts. Furthermore, the work shows non-academic level studies in terms of circularity indicators, such as online tools, websites; and other taxonomy proposals of index-based methodologies. ISO Circular Economy standards - a barrier to participation The CSIRO's recent report on the adoption of standards for the transition to a circular economy (https://lnkd.in/gZEu9tFu) tackled the question of barriers to adoption. At the top of that list was "Standards gaps, development and access". Here's the section on access (pp17): "Access to standards: The cost of accessing standards was identified as disproportionately affecting small to medium enterprises (SMEs), which account for over 98% of enterprises in most APEC economies (Hredzak 2020). Access challenges create a barrier to the ability of SMEs to implement relevant standards. It was noted that some standard development bodies (e.g., ISO) were considering the cost structures for public interest standards. The cost of accessing standards was noted to have potentially adverse consequences due to some businesses buying the cheapest possible standard offered internationally." The ISO just released three standards that, together, set the stage for an organisation to adopt circularity as the fundamental philosophy underlying their business. Together, they cost nearly AUD1,000. There's a basic tenet of behavioural economics: make free (or very cheap) the behaviour you want to encourage. The corollary to that is to put a price on behaviours you want to discourage. Given the overwhelming urgency of a global transition to circularity, and the critical role played by standards such as these, the price tag seems completely counter-productive.

A circular economy is a worthy goal in itself. But it also presents an opportunity for organizations to gain a competitive edge. One McKinsey study estimates that a circular economy could represent a revenue opportunity of more than $1 trillion in Europe alone in 2050.
