Just finished the course “Productive Leadership” by Dave Crenshaw!. The course provided me valuable insights into effective leadership, particularly when it comes to nurturing and developing other leaders within ann organization. Below are the leadership principles I learnt during the course: 1. Nurturing Future Leaders: Productive leaders understand that their success is closely tied to the success of their team members. By investing time and effort in developing the skills and leadership potential of their subordinates, they create a culture of growth and empowerment. 2. Overcoming the Fear of Job Security: Leaders who are secure in their positions recognize that building a strong team actually enhances job security. When you nurture and produce more leaders, you contribute to the long-term success of the organization, making your role even more valuable. 3. Building a Strong Circle of Influence: Productive leaders build a network of trust and influence within the organization. They become known for their ability to develop talent, which makes them indispensable to the team and the company as a whole. 4. Return on Investment in Leadership Development: The time and effort invested in developing subordinates come back manyfold. When you have capable leaders at various levels, it frees you up to focus on strategic initiatives and long-term goals. 5. Gardener Approach to Leadership: This metaphor emphasizes the importance of patience and nurturing when dealing with mistakes and challenges within the team. It involves these key elements: a. Avoid Immediate Reaction: Recognize that mistakes are a part of growth. Unless a mistake is critical or life-threatening, allow your team members to learn from their errors without immediate intervention. b. Correct with Clarity: If a mistake becomes a recurring issue or poses a significant problem, provide clear and constructive feedback. Focus on helping the individual understand what went wrong and how to improve. c. Support and Care: As your team members make efforts to correct their mistakes, offer support, guidance, and encouragement. Show that you believe in their ability to learn and grow. 6. Consistent Accountability: Productive leaders maintain consistency in holding team members accountable for their actions and decisions. Ever heard the old saying, 'Leaders are born, not made'? This traditional view can make the idea of leadership feel exclusive and unreachable for many of us. But does believing that only a select few are born leaders mean that others cannot aspire to be leaders themselves? No, but I understand why this belief is so common. We're constantly shown examples of charismatic, seemingly natural leaders, all echoing the same message: without innate traits, you can't lead effectively. But what if there was another way? What if you didn’t have to be born a leader to excel in leadership roles? Imagine a world where developing leadership skills through comprehensive training, enriched by mentorship and robust support systems—not just inherent traits—paves the way to leadership success. The truth is, while it's appealing to think that some are predestined to lead, holding onto this myth is limiting. Believing only a few are born leaders could prevent us from recognising and nurturing potential leadership qualities in ourselves and others. By adopting a more inclusive approach, we open the doors to a world where anyone can develop the necessary skills to lead and inspire. Recently, I had a conversation with a nonprofit CEO about the fact that leadership is harder, more complicated, and more nuanced than people realize. People don’t become true leaders simply because they’ve been promoted into management — or even senior management — and they don’t develop into really good leaders overnight. It takes a lot of work and eventually you realize that leadership is an art. This article does a great job outlining some of the stumbles I’ve seen leaders make over the years. It’s a good read if you’re new to leadership, aspire to leadership, or are looking to refine your art.
