A couple of weeks ago, we conducted our annual Central European Energy Practice Area meeting in Prague with ~200 colleagues - here are my key takeaways: 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐬. Skill demands in the energy industry have been changing drastically: from crisis management and gas expertise in 22/23 to growth-oriented expertise in the heating transition, flexibility, etc. in 24/25 (to name a few). Going forward, adaptiveness remains a core success skill in this complex market. 𝐌𝐢𝐝-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. Long-term visions of a decarbonized energy future are valuable goalposts for the energy transition. However, breaking down these visions and coming up with decisive plans for the mid-term will make all the difference between surviving and thriving on the way to decarbonization. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞. At the meeting, we conducted intense debates on controversial topics, including the roles of natural gas/LNG, H2, and lignite in the energy transition. Continuously challenging our viewpoints drives progress and elicits the development of solutions that stand the test of reality. Keeping these insights in mind, I can't wait for the challenges ahead! #BCG #EnergyinCE #EnergyTransformation

A real privilege to attend the 2024 European Energy Policy Conference last week, hosted by Copenhagen Business School in collaboration with University of Cambridge, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and DTU - Technical University of Denmark. Great to catch up with Andrew Garrick PhD and Amanda Gregor as well. Some fascinating presentations and discussions on the challenges of upgrading electricity grids across North American and European state boundaries; the relative merits of “UK CfDs” versus “European CfDs”; lowest total cost (marginal) curtailment of renewables and many other topics. All in all, a good test of the grey matter - and a great opportunity for Daniel Gear and I to discuss findings from our recent Just Transition report (see previous posts) with some leading thinkers in energy policy. It’s clear that "Just Transition" means different things in different places: in some areas its overwhelmingly about replacing oil and gas jobs, and in others (like Shetland) the question “Who should benefit from the resources of a place?” is more critical. The Voar view is that for the energy transition to be fair as well as fast, communities hosting energy projects need to receive a fair share of the resource value - and what that looks like will vary across countries, sectors and projects. This is an area we’re continuing to work on, so please do get in touch if you're interested to collaborate. #EnergyPolicy #JustTransition #MedLovSkalManLandBygge

Interesting first day at EIC (Energy Industries Council)’s Energy Export Conference. Siemens Energy’s Franziska Weiss contributed with a thought-provoking presentation on the future of the energy transition. My key takeaways can be summarised by three 'P's. 1. **Progress**: We've made significant strides in renewable energy adoption and technology advancements. However, this is just the beginning, and our efforts so far have laid a solid foundation for what's to come. 2. **Pace**: The urgency to accelerate our efforts cannot be overstated. The current pace of change is not sufficient to meet our ambitious climate goals. We need to innovate faster and implement solutions more rapidly to stay on track. 3. **Partners**: The scale of the challenge requires unprecedented collaboration. No single entity can tackle this alone. Governments, businesses, and communities must work together to create a sustainable energy future. The conference was a powerful reminder that while progress has been made, the journey ahead demands speed and strong partnerships. Looking forward to driving these principles forward in our ongoing projects! #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #EEC24

The latest edition of Capgemini’s World Energy Markets Observatory (WEMO) 2024 makes it clear: the energy transition is not only a technological challenge, but a societal one. As we work towards a sustainable future, corporate responsibility plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the energy transition is inclusive, fair, and impactful. Key insights from this year's edition of WEMO: 🔹Accelerating Renewables: While renewable energy capacity is growing, the pace must increase to meet net-zero goals. Corporations are responsible for driving this transition by investing in clean energy and supporting innovation. 🔹Empowering Communities: As we shift to cleaner energy sources, it’s vital to ensure that no one is left behind. WEMO highlights the importance of upskilling and preparing communities to participate in the energy transition, particularly through green jobs. 🔹Collaborating for Impact: The energy transition requires cross-sector collaboration, and businesses must lead the way in forging partnerships that deliver tangible results for both people and the planet. WEMO underscores the need for collective action across industries. At Capgemini, we remain committed to making sustainability central to our operations and to empowering communities for a more resilient future. https://lnkd.in/eAMMXrxP #Sustainability #CSR #EnergyTransition #GreenJobs #NetZero #Capgemini”

The International Energy Agency (IEA)'s flagship #WorldEnergyOutlook, published every year, is the most authoritative global source of energy analysis and projections. It identifies and explores the biggest trends in energy demand and supply, as well as what they mean for energy security, emissions and economic development. The World Energy Outlook covers the whole energy system, using a scenario-based approach to highlight the central choices, consequences and contingencies that lie ahead. It also illustrates how the course of the energy system might be affected by changing key variables, including the energy policies adopted by governments around the world. Amazing and very informative as ever year. Thanks a lot to Fatih Birol bey and whole International Energy Agency (IEA) team for the great study and sharing for free with the public. You can watch the Report launch (16 Oct 2024 11:00—11:40 Paris Time) from below link and also find the #WorldEnergyOutlook2024 Report for free to download. https://lnkd.in/gKrwkvAS https://lnkd.in/gkCc4F5f
