"Which job positions I should hire to manage the operations of my NGO?" asked one of my clients. I have seen this as a constant problem with NGOs. They are busy collecting funds but are unable to find the right people to manage operations. As an NGO expert, I would recommend prioritizing the following initial job positions when establishing a new NGO (depending on the work requirement and scale of operations) 1. Executive Director/CEO: The Executive Director oversees all aspects of the NGO's operations, including program development, fundraising, financial management, and stakeholder relations. 2. Program Manager/Coordinator: A Program Manager or Coordinator is responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring the NGO's programs and projects. They work closely with staff, volunteers, partners, and beneficiaries to ensure the effective delivery of services and the achievement of program goals. 3. Fundraising/Development Officer: They identify funding opportunities, cultivate relationships with donors, prepare grant proposals, and coordinate fundraising events and campaigns. 4. Finance/Administrative Officer: A Finance or Administrative Officer is responsible for managing the organization's finances, including budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, and compliance with financial regulations. 5. Communications/Marketing Officer: This profile is responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies to promote the NGO's work, engage stakeholders, and mobilize support. Hiring staff for these roles ensures that the NGO can deliver its mission, attract funding, and engage with stakeholders from the outset. I've been seeing posts in several of my groups lately discussing the legality of NP Board members being paid to do work for the nonprofit they are serving. There is quite a difference of opinion. Though it is legal - the naysayers say this creates a significant conflict of interest. While I believe it can create a conflict I also believe there are ways to mitigate that conflict... First, this question can and should be discussed in your org policies and procedures. If your org DOES decide to hire a staff member from your board, the policy should be clear on types of conflicts, how often they are disclosed (minimum of annually), and how to navigate should a conflict arise between disclosures. Remember, as a board member your PRIMARY responsibility is the financial viability of the org for which you are serving. Any activity that could pose even the appearance that your fiduciary responsibilities are conflicted should be disclosed and should prevent your ability to vote for whatever issue that contradicts your financial obligation to the board/org. So, though it is legal it should be acceptable per your policies and it should be fully transparent in your dealings so as to prevent any possibility of scandal.

Why you haven't been offered a pay raise (despite working your socks off) I get it, you've been extra efficient at work for the past few months/years. Writing hundreds of emails per day, and being busy completing tasks on a to-do list longer than your arm. All your colleagues have nothing but nice things to say about you. You're the star. But, despite your best efforts, your manager doesn't seem to believe that you deserve a raise. Why? Well, there could be many reasons beyond control, and despite your best efforts, a raise is just not on a table. But here's a few important things to consider before asking for a raise:  1. Are you just being busy or are you adding value? Remember, you'll only be worthy of a raise if you do one of the followings:   ▪️ Help the company make more money   ▪️ Help the company save money   ▪️ Make other people's lives easier (so they can make more money) If the tasks you're being busy with don't fulfill any of these points, find other tasks that do.  2. Are you management material? Even if you're not in a managerial role, it helps to have the attitude of someone who is. A raise-worthy worker will make sure things are done the right way, and on time, as though they were a manager. But without being bossy ! 3. Are you managing up? No, you should not start ordering your boss around. "Managing up" is about knowing your boss likes, or dislikes, and how they work best.
