At Brookhaven Lab, CFN researchers Xiaohui Qu, Lu Deyu, and Mark Hybertsen teamed with NSLS-II scientist Eli Stavitski and CSI scientist Matthew Carbone to demonstrate a new, semi-supervised machine learning model for discovering structure-spectrum relationships in x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra. What does this mean, you ask? XANES is a powerful X-ray technique — an absorption spectroscopy for understanding local electronic structure, such as the oxidation states of a material's components. XANES spectra are highly-complex — reflecting the complexity of real materials in real environments, and so they typically require expert analysis to interpret. This research team, and others working in this area, are making progress developing AI-based tools to help scientists deduce the structure of a material from its XANES spectrum. Through advances like the one reported in this work, we can imagine one day in the not-too-distant future having these tools as our scientific companions, sitting with us at the XANES instrument, analyzing the spectra as they are measured, and saying 'Hey you know what? Based on this spectrum, I think your material may look like this.' And then showing us! That will be amazing! You can check out the paper in Physical Review Materials: https://lnkd.in/dYAhvz8m And take a look at the research capabilities available at the CFN. The CFN mission is helping you achieve your highest nanoscience research aspirations. Come check us out! http://www.bnl.gov/cfn #CFNatBrookhaven #NSLSII

📣 On April 25, experts from leading knowledge institutions in the Netherlands gathered at the invitation of Centre for Quantum and Society and Rathenau Instituut to share their analyses of the societal impact of quantum technology and how they influence its development. 💡 The purpose of the meeting was not only to learn from each other's analyses and efforts but also to foster collaboration and strengthen each other's activities. Given the multifaceted impact of quantum technology, a wide range of topics were addressed, including: ✔The geopolitical dimension of quantum technology and bridging gaps between countries. ✔Strategic autonomy and informing political and governance entities. ✔Harnessing the economic potential of quantum technology and promoting responsible innovation. ✔Different transformation phases of embedding the technology and roles of stakeholders in key processes. ✔Security and sustainability considerations of quantum technology. ✔Societal participation in decision-making and shaping perceptions. ✔Bridging businesses with science, education, and skills. Key stakeholders in this field, such as WRR - Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy ECP Platform voor de InformatieSamenleving, Stichting Toekomstbeeld der Techniek (STT) and @WAAG Society were invited, to engage in discussions. 🤝The afternoon will lead to further actions, with Centre for Quantum and Society and the Rathenau Instituut taking on coordinating roles. Quantum technology is standing at the crossroads of science and society, with some parts already in the market, others being worked on in laboratories, and some still in the realm of future possibilities. In this developmental phase, it is of most importance to look at choices and opportunities to align developments with societal values, and to ensure that technology contributes responsibly to the economy and societal challenges. 🧠 Would you like to contribute to these discussions? Did you know that EMBL Hamburg has some of the best facilities for x-ray scattering? With the SAXS beamline P12 at the Petra III storage ring at DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron), EMBL Hamburg develops advanced methods for the analysis of the X-ray and neutron scattering data. Modern mathematical techniques such as regularization, non-linear optimization, heuristic algorithms etc are employed for building three-dimensional models based on the experimental scattering data. Special emphasis is put on combining the results of SAXS with X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy and electron microscopy to improve 3D model refinement. Want to learn more?
