Creating harmony in a design requires attention to the smallest details – even naming the colors. Last week, I worked on a color palette for a pattern I’m developing for a client. It’s a part of the process I truly enjoy – selecting shades that bring balance and calm to the design. The colors, soft greens and subtle blues, were carefully chosen to align with the client’s vision for the product it will become part of. Along the way, I flipped through Nature’s Palette, a book of historical color standards. I love the poetic names that give each color a story of its own, adding depth and meaning to the design. It’s this meticulous approach that makes a design feel unique and personal – and that makes this work so rewarding. #surfacepatterndesign #nordicdesign #colortheory #customdesign #interiortrends

While the principle advocates for practical and purposeful design, it has sometimes been interpreted too rigidly, leading to designs that are purely utilitarian and lack visual appeal. Adhering to "form follows function" without regard for aesthetics is limiting.

Have you ever looked at the works of designers or artists from centuries ago and wondered—how did they achieve such timeless brilliance? I recently revisited the story of the Bauhaus movement, a pivotal moment in design history that completely shifted how we view art and functionality. It wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was about purpose. Their philosophy—"form follows function"—made me question how often we overcomplicate things in modern design. Think about it. Chairs, buildings, even typography—every element served a purpose, nothing was superfluous. What I admire most is how they balanced utility with creativity, stripping things down to their core while making sure each piece carried an emotional weight. In today’s world of fast design trends and fleeting aesthetics, I often wonder how we can borrow from that ethos. How do we craft something that doesn’t just cater to the now but remains relevant decades down the line? History is a treasure trove of lessons. It teaches us patience, clarity, and respect for the craft. As designers, I believe we’re not just creating for today—we’re leaving behind markers for tomorrow. What’s a piece of art or design from history that inspires you? Let’s explore timelessness together.
