There is a club near Abu Dhabi that is signing talent after talent. It's Al Ain Sports & Cultural Club It's a club that is changing the paradigms of the football market in the Emirates. And I'm happy one of the most talented youth coaches I know in football work there. ✅ Expectation vs. Reality In the imagination of many, players go to the leagues of the Middle East to finish their careers. ❌ But that has not been the case for a while. In the past two years, Al Ain Sports & Cultural Club has signed some talented youngsters such as: ▪ Mateo Sanabria (20 y.o.) from Club Atlético Lanús for €3.6m ▪ Matias Palacios (22) from FC Basel 1893 for €3m ▪ Matias Segovia (21) from Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas (loan) ❗ And apparently, the academy is of the highest level. ✅ Thoughts Football is increasingly global. 👉 This means more competition for talent. Saudi is moving at such a pace and it can be hard to keep up... this Visit Saudi ad hit spot, debunking common perceptions about the Kingdom. I remember the first time I went to Saudi in 2018 - it was starkly different to how it is today. In little over 5 years the change that I have seen personally is amazing! Here's a few things I have seen... 1. F1 - Sure, money talks, but the street circuit and organisation at the Jeddah F1 race is excellent - a lot of races that have been going for 10+ years are worse to go to and the after race concerts are second to none! This is testament to the Kingdoms will to do things well at the first time of asking. 2. AlUla - given the history of the place, it would have been easy to keep AlUla covered and restrict access - by opening up the area, the Kingdom is embracing its history and showcasing wonders that it has to offer - I personally love the Nabatean history and whilst taking a tour of the place, it is great to see how proud Saudis are that AlUla is in their land. A must visit. 3. Saudi's love a chat - Taxi drivers, restaurant staff, coffee shop workers - you will bump into Saudis and you can have a great conversation with them! One of the best things is also how entrepreneurial they are - I have met people, spoken for 10 minutes and come up with new business ideas with them on the fly 20 minutes later - next time you are over, have a chat! 4. Women drive taxis - there is a huge amount of private taxis that are driven by women - especially young Saudi women. If women want to do something... they can! 5. Optimism is infectious - no matter who you speak to, everyone is excited! It's not a money thing, it's an opportunity thing! Everyone is moving in the same direction - to be the best. The buzz is real! Personally, I can't wait to get going in the Kingdom, we have a few things coming up that could be game changers and having met with a lot of people on the ground, I'm excited to see what's to come. I don't like analogies drawn between sporting teams and work teams - they mostly don't work for obvious reasons. However I can't help thinking we can learn something from Emirates Team New Zealand's win in the America's Cup over the weekend (beating Inneos Britannia 7-2). Winning three Cups in a row is unprecedented for the world's oldest sporting trophy. It belies the belief that you have to have unlimited resources, the best tech and scale. New Zealand has none of these and yet the team triumphed against the odds. I liken ETNZ's victory to that of a small business over a corporation. Sometimes fleet of foot decision-making, reliance on each other, canny approaches to probelms, grass roots innovation, lack of hierarchy and a can-do attitude is all it takes to prevail over corporate behemoths. All the things corporations aren't good at. This may be the greatest achievement in world sport. It's a way bigger Cup than the Webb Elliss and way harder to win.
