In Reflection: The Power of Putting On (and Taking Off) a Mask Celebrating Mother’s Day this year was even more special - as throughout the day - my daughter shared wonderful memories on social media. Her thoughtful selections were of moments that escaped my present thoughts, but upon reflection - filled me with gratitude. Our day was even more memorable as my mother joined us in honoring the work of moms. Walking back after brunch, she casually recalled perilous first moments of my brother’s birth. Startled why we hadn’t heard this critical story, I mused that she usually didn’t take credit for her hard work as a giver-of-care. My mom (also a medical doctor) just considered handling and getting through life-threatening events part of the every day. As my Korn Ferry colleagues and I prepared to recognize National Nurses Week, it struck me that healthcare professionals regularly apply guidance the rest of us are reminded of (and sometimes tune out) - that to help others, they must first put on their mask. I then questioned - while givers-of-care understand these important preparatory procedures, when their mask comes off – who provides them with the necessary support? As we draw focus on healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, more is needed as challenging recent times have pressured this vital industry. Nurses are a deserving group who in helping others - often do not experience a spotlight to reflect on their #wellbeing needs. However, taking the moment to reflect on personal and professional efforts to draw meaningful and actionable connections is critical to truly growing and developing. The importance of providing reflective spaces – through coaching - for those whose roles involve giving-of-care is even more heightened as we transition from celebrating #nationalnursesweek to #mothersday and now #internationalcoachingweek. Helping achieve clarity around employee #holisticwellbeing and activating the resources necessary for positive change – to amplify performance at work - is what underpins my passion as an #executivecoach and #organizationalconsultant. Empowering the healthcare profession, particularly nurses, to be at peak professional performance in delivering compassionate care is what we do best in our work at Korn Ferry. In recognition of incredible mask-wearing professionals, my Korn Ferry colleagues and I are proud to offer these reimagined ways to support the well-being and professional development of nurses so they can be their best at providing care for others. Maureen Hernandez Sutton I am 100% in agreement with nurses as value drivers (not only because my Mom was a nurse, but due to my experiences observing them in action). Thank you for your thoughtful reflection about your Mother and the nurses in the world.
