Veterinary Pathology - Diagnostics Focused; Research and Development, Learning and Education are my passions
Wow, what a review of the book: "If you think you don't really need pathology for every-day clinical practice, this is the book to change your mind. I'll admit, I was delighted to have the opportunity to review this book as I've always tried to apply good pathology principles in my years in practice, and I thought I'd have this in the bag. Not so! Fortunately, this book covers not only good principles, but teaches the essentials such as how to make your pathology submissions safely (you'd be amazed what some labs have received!), and provides a guide on how to do a thorough small animal post-mortem examination, collect appropriate samples and scribe your gross findings down logically. Not really doing many post mortems? You may wish to consider how best to maximise your biopsy technique. With these concise guidelines and an up-to-date description of the limitations, and pros and cons of each type of biopsy procedure, you will be left well informed and, together with the pathologist, ready to make the most of each sample taken. The middle chapters delve more into what can be done at the lab with submitted tissue and outlines when special stains are useful, how immunohistochemistry can be beneficial, and when to reach for other testing so as not to miss that infectious agent, or to further investigate tumour behaviour. The book wraps up with two chapters on oncology. I usually leave this bit to the pathologists, but a review of terminology alongside a good understanding of the features of malignancy and the challenges of differentiating it from inflammation made it a worthwhile read. The last chapter takes the mystery out of the histological description and discusses prognostication of the common tumours in practice, such as lymphomas, mast cell tumours and sarcomas, in a clear and concise way. The icing on the cake: lots of great pictures and examples in amongst the text, and self-assessment quizzes at the end of each chapter to help you consolidate what you've read to add to your CPD record. This book is a must for conscientious clinicians of any level or bias and is a valuable addition to the practice shelf." TSE (Tumour Specific Electroporation) could be highly beneficial in equine clinics for several reasons: ➡️ Targeted Treatment: TSE allows for precise targeting of tumour cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. This is crucial in equine cases where tumours can be difficult to access or located near vital structures. ➡️ Minimally Invasive: Electroporation techniques are minimally invasive compared to traditional surgical methods, reducing recovery time and minimizing the risk of complications in horses. ➡️ Customization: TSE can be tailored to the specific needs of each equine patient, adjusting parameters such as voltage and duration of treatment to effectively eradicate tumors while minimizing side effects. ➡️ Reduced Side Effects: By targeting only tumour cells, TSE reduces the risk of systemic side effects commonly associated with traditional cancer treatments like chemotherapy. ➡️ Versatility: TSE can be used to treat various types of tumours in horses, including skin tumours, sarcoids, and even internal tumours with proper imaging guidance. 👇 ✅️ Overall, TSE offers a promising alternative for equine oncology, providing effective tumour treatment with minimal invasiveness and reduced side effects, making it well-suited for use in equine clinics. A new paper in veterinary and comparative oncology highlights the high variability in patient size and how tumour “size” alone is a cumbersome prognostic metric. Instead, using tumour volume to body or weight ratios makes a lot more sense. In our preliminary study to develop an ML algorithm that can predict lymph node metastasis, this metric was not significantly correlated with traditional outcome measures, but we had a smaller sample size. This work from a team in Portugal is important and intriguing; highlighting the role for our automated tumour segmentation models in canine oral tumours. Stay tuned to learn more!
