Daniel succesfully defended his thesis, with the title Quantum Theory of Exciton-Exciton Interactions in Atomically Thin Semiconductors, on January 12. "When nanomaterials are hit by light, fascinating quantum-mechanical particles such as excitons may form. In my thesis I study the impact of excitons on the optical properties of atomically thin semiconductors, materials which potentially could be used in next-generation nanotechnologies," says Daniel. Light mimics magnetic response in photonic crystal experiments by Clarence Oxford Los Angeles CA (SPX) Apr 26, 2024 Researchers at Penn State have achieved a significant milestone by making light "feel" a magnetic field within a photonic crystal composed of silicon and glass. The light within the crystal behaves similarly to electrons, spinning in circles and forming discrete energy bands, a phenomenon typically associated with electrons in magnetic fields. This discovery opens up potential new methods for enhancing the interaction between light and matter, potentially benefiting photonic technologies like compact lasers. The experiments, based on a theoretical prediction by Penn State's Professor of Physics Mikael Rechtsman, graduate student Jonathan Guglielmon, and Columbia University mathematician Michael Weinstein, were detailed in a paper released in Nature Photonics. W color centers, silicon tri-interstitial defects, show promise as artificial atoms. This paper describes quantum electrodynamics experiments with W centers in circular Bragg grating cavities, designed for moderate Purcell enhancement (Fp = 12.5) and efficient luminescence extraction (40%). Tuning the cavity to the zero-phonon transition of W centers at 1218 nm yields a 20-fold intensity boost and a 2-fold reduction in relaxation time. Finite-difference time-domain simulations align with a quantum efficiency of 65±10%. Therefore, W centers offer potential for the development of on-demand single-photon sources via cavity quantum electrodynamics in silicon photonic chips. Microstructure and reflectance of porous GaN distributed Bragg reflectors on silicon substrates — Journal of Applied Physics: https://lnkd.in/e58RZDrF. • The latest research from the Cambridge Centre for Gallium Nitride charts new territory in the novel porous GaN-on-silicon platform through sub-surface BSE-SEM imaging. • We demonstrate that our defect-driven etching process for porous semiconductor mirrors, developed for GaN layers grown on sapphire, works equally well in the low-cost, high-throughput GaN-on-silicon platform. • Stay tuned for future three-dimensional reconstructions via FIB-SEM tomography, providing volumetric insight into the porous morphology of this next-generation optical material!

"Researchers led by Prof. Xiaoyong Hu at Peking University, China, are interested in topological photonics. They have proposed an interdisciplinary approach to study the topological systems through information entropy (IE) in real space. The work is published in the journal Frontiers of Optoelectronics. Topological photonics plays an important role in the fields of fundamental physics and photonic devices. The Kagome model, the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and the other topological models are used as a platform to study the novel physics phenomenon, and guide to design novel photonic devices such as topologically protected laser and robust transmission device." #photonics #topologicalsystems #informationentropy

Quantum Light Droplets Unveil New Realms of Macroscopic Complexity Scientists have advanced the field by stabilizing exciton-polaritons in semiconductor photonic gratings, achieving long-lived and optically configurable quantum fluids suitable for complex system simulations. Researchers from CNR Nanotec in Lecce and the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw used a new generation of semiconductor photonic gratings to optically tailor complexes of quantum droplets of light that became bound together into macroscopic coherent states. The research underpins a new method to simulate and explore interactions between artificial atoms in a highly reconfigurable manner, using optics.
