Electric motorbikes are the key to cleaner, smarter transport in Africa. But is the e-mobility revolution a reality in the continent?
Last week I had the pleasure to attend the Africa E-Mobility Week and could confirm that electric motorbikes are taking over the roads at fast speed. Especially East Africa is on the brink of a transportation revolution. As reliance on motorbikes grows for daily commutes and business, there is a unique opportunity to reshape how people move.
Listening to the leaders in the sector, some key learnings:
🔋 Battery financing—closing the financing gap for large-scale battery production is the main constraint e-mobility companies are currently facing
🚧 Charging infrastructure—charging stations come first, electric vehicles second. Initial investment remains a challenge, but there is room for collaboration among industry players
⚖️ Policy alignment—clear regulations and incentives could accelerate adoption. Governments need to implement stable, forward-thinking policies
Let’s make e-mobility work for Africa. Thanks for the thought provoking insights to Jakob Hornbach, James Obarowski, Josh Whale, Sten Van Der Ham, Axel Peyriere, Tombo Banda, Hawa Bonaya
