Is coal’s revival a blip or something more? In June alone, NSW’s four remaining coal plants operated at 77% of capacity, a 13-year high. Key to the recent rise in coal and gas power was the unexpected drop of almost 20% in wind energy output even as more turbines got added to the grid. So what is going on with wind? Q2 was an anomaly with Weatherzone estimating the wind lull at the start of autumn was so extreme as to be a one-in-4000 year event. The U.S. remains a significant participant in effecting climate change with its extensive natural gas resources which will continue to be required to reduce GHG emissions as a cleaner alternative to burning coal to produce the energy the world requires to function.

European energy prices have taken a tumble as natural gas futures hit a six-month low. This is due to a new Atlantic storm that has brought unseasonable warmth and boosted wind-power generation. In Germany and France, intraday power prices have fallen below zero for several hours. It's a sign that supply has outstripped demand. When will these Alberta gas plants be back at full capacity? A bit unfortunate that during the weekend's cold snap that we had a shortage on gas generation (to keep us warm and keep the lights on). That is 'variable' energy similar to the variable energy of wind and solar. Reliability comes down to how well we can plan and knowing in advance if energy assets will be down: mechanically, feedstock, or lack of wind and sun. Natural gas will continue playing a critical role in Australia’s energy security in a net zero economy to 2050 and beyond, with the Australian Government’s Future Gas Strategy highlighting that continued investment in new gas supply is needed. The Strategy makes clear the importance of gas in the future energy mix, stating that “Under all credible net zero scenarios, natural gas is needed through to 2050 and beyond...
