A rotary kiln is a long slightly tilted refractory lined open-ended cylindrical furnace.The kiln rotates very slowly about its longitudinal axis and the raw charge is fed into the top end of the cylinder. The feed (calcium carbonate in the form of solid granules) is heated and starts decomposing into lime (CaO) once it reaches a specific temperature (>900 C) by its exposure to the hot combustion gas mixture flowing counter-currently. Finally, the solid is transported to the lower end where complete conversion of calcium carbonate to lime is achieved and the product is discharged. The cement industry is responsible for 8% of the total CO2 emissions from all industries, following Iron & Steel and Chemicals & Plastics. This significant impact is largely due to the nature of our process, specifically the calcination of limestone, which releases substantial amount of CO2. One of the most effective strategies to reduce our carbon footprint is to lower the clinker amount in cement. Clinker, the primary ingredient in cement, is responsible for a significant portion of the industry's CO2 emissions. By reducing its use and replacing it with Secondary Cementitious Materials (SCMs), we can achieve similar hydraulic properties while drastically cutting emissions. SCMs like Fly Ash, Silica Fume, and Metakaolin require activation to be used effectively. However, Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS) stands out as a game-changer. GBFS can be directly ground with gypsum to produce slag cement, offering a straightforward and efficient pathway to more sustainable cement production. Ladle Refining Furnaces (LRFs) play a crucial role in modern steelmaking, refining molten metal and ensuring high-quality steel production. With capacities ranging from 12 to 100 tons, LRFs achieve several critical objectives: removing oxygen (deoxidation), hydrogen (degassing), reducing phosphorus and reducing sulfur concentrations to as low as 0.002% (desulfurization). They also eliminate undesirable non-metallic elements, enhancing micro-cleanliness. LRFs modify the composition of remaining impurities to improve the microstructure of steel, ensuring homogeneity and optimal inclusion morphology. I'm pleased to announce that our latest research article, entitled "Investigating the chamber filling effect on the jaw crusher, cone crusher and #HPGR performance" has been published in Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly. This industrial research focuses on some attempts to improve the efficiency of the #comminution circuits. As you know, the inter-particle breakage (Choked Feeding) condition of crushing equipment is not just a simple matter of the touching of a button. Actually, there are various challenges behind this subject related to operational factors and initial design such as CSS or zero gap adjustment, appropriate level control loop (based on hard and soft sensors), optimal feeder and bin design, proper distance between feeder and hopper and type of feeding and so on.
