Dr Towan Nöthling is a postdoctoral fellow in the Biophysics Group. He completed his PhD on spectral modelling of photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes at UP. He is currently working on a variety of projects, mainly focusing on spectroscopic modelling, as well as being involved in projects aiming to improve the quality of laser beams and model fungal spore dispersal. Together with Prof. Krüger, Towan recently authored a book chapter about spectral modelling in the book Quantum Mechanics of Biological Systems that is expected to be published by CRC press soon. 'Photosynthesis begins when microscopic complexes composed of proteins and pigments (chlorophylls) absorb light. By using spectroscopy to study *how* these complexes absorb light, we can gain information about the design principles that make photosynthetic light-harvesting so exceptionally efficient. We can then apply those design principles in artificial systems like solar cells and batteries.' Towan enjoys biophysics because it combines the complex beauty of biology and chemistry with the rigour of mathematics and physics. He especially enjoys doing biophysics with other people in the group because 'We get along well, and everybody's personality and sense of humour makes for a fantastic group dynamic.' #meettheteam #biophysics #research #science #innovation #universityofpretoria

[Applications is extended to 15 March 2024] 10th Cell Biology Course The 10th HKU-Pasteur Cell Biology Course will focus on the great potential of cell biology, the discipline that investigates the organizing principles of cells, to contribute to many areas of societal needs, as we go beyond the interactions of components within a single level of biological organization. Lectures will highlight the integrated approach, spanning biology, chemistry, physics, and imaging, to interrogate these core principles (cell division, intracellular transport, organelles, cell migration, cancer….) in mechanistic fashion by drawing parallels between unicellular organisms, such as yeast, and multicellular organisms, such as plants and animals.Have a look at the detailed program of the Cell Biology Course here. Open to postgraduate students, MD, DVM, postdoctoral fellows and young scientists from Hong Kong and overseas. The course (MMPH6174) is included in the coursework curriculum for research postgraduate studies of the University of Hong Kong. Registration fees (HKD 2,000, non refundable) include accommodation (on sharing twin basis for overseas participants) and food (lunch and coffee breaks). A limited number of travel grants will be awarded. Please return the completed form, including 1-2 letters of recommendation to hku-pasteur@hku.hk Refer to the link below for more information: https://lnkd.in/gBCbh6ED

🌟 New Publication Alert! 🌟 I'm excited to share the second article from my PhD research, supervised by Prof. Juarez L. F. Da Silva 🇧🇷, in collaboration with Pedro Ivo Rodrigues Moraes and Albert F.B. Bittencourt. 📄 Title: Unveiling the impact of organic cation passivation on structural and optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional perovskites thin films 🔍 Abstract: We conducted density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explore the effects of 17 different organic cations on the passivation of thin two-dimensional perovskite films, specifically focusing on how these cations interact with the inorganic framework (PbI₆-octahedra). Our findings reveal that Brønsted–Lowry acid–base interactions, alongside H-bond formation facilitated by oxygenated groups (-OH, -COOH), significantly enhance the energetic stability and electron density localization between layers. Among the cations studied, 4-fluorophenylethylammonium (FPEA), phenylethylammonium (PEA), and butylammonium (BtA) show the highest potential for real-world applications. 📚 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dXYr6Pca #MaterialsScience #Perovskites #DFT #Research #Chemistry #PhD #AcademicPublishing #ThinFilms

🔬 Laboratories are extremely complex facilities, often requiring strictly regulated environments while still providing robust energy and ventilation capabilities. The Chen Neuroscience Research Building at Caltech provides advanced tools and techniques aimed at extending the technical university's long traditions in molecular, cellular, and systems neuroscience. Altura was selected as the commissioning agent for this newly constructed lab because of our ability to ensure a smooth handover of the building from construction into operations, leveraging an enhanced warranty process that ensured the building performed as intended for all researchers. ⬇ Read more about this new model for resiliency in #laboratory commissioning, all while helping this state-of-the-art lab consume nearly 30% less energy than a typical lab building on campus. #sustainableengineering #performancedelivery #buildingcommissioning https://lnkd.in/gUQDPVav
