Are you trying to decide between a career as a Data Scientist or Software Engineer? It can be a tough choice, but here's a tip: think about the type of problem you want to solve. Data Scientists are great at uncovering insights from data by leveraging statistical methods, machine learning algorithms, and data visualization techniques. They are also adept at communicating their findings in a clear and concise manner. Software Engineers, on the other hand, are great at building solutions by writing code, designing software architectures, and debugging applications. They are also skilled at working in teams and collaborating with other engineers to create robust and reliable software. Ultimately, the choice between a career as a Data Scientist or Software Engineer depends on the type of problem you want to solve and the skills you possess. #CareerAdvice,#DataScience,#SoftwareEngineering,#careergrowth #jobhunt

Creator of Optimization Solvers, Architect of the ECB Transaction Settlement System, Inventor of Algorithms
Oh, this is so 2000! Should one learn about linear programming? Sure. How to model declaratively? Yes. But everyone and their dog can do that. Leaving it at that is like recommending to a data scientist that they master the use of sklearn. Of course they should know some tools well, but if their knowledge ends there, then you might as well hire an LLM instead of a person. Seriously, a good decision scientist should, first and foremost, know how to develop and implement efficient algorithms. This means understanding computational complexity and data structures and building solid software engineering skills. 80% of what a hands-on decision scientist actually does is software engineering plus the development of heuristics for the many problems that are not solved well by MIP or SAT or CP. (Thanks to tools like Seeker, the heuristic part is becoming much less.) Moreover, the time is long past when it was okay to consider only deterministic problems. Most real-world problem instances are based on estimated data. When FedEX plans their tours for tomorrow, they are actually not facing a vehicle routing problem but a stochastic vehicle routing problem, because who knows what the traffic times will be exactly? When Walmart builds out their network of warehouses, they are not facing a capacitated network design problem but a stochastic network design problem. They only have estimates of future demands, and it takes 12–24 months to get a new warehouse operational. Thanks to the advent of new tools like InsideOpt Seeker, we can now also use the declarative programming paradigm for complex stochastic and non-convex problems. When you hire a decision scientist, make sure they understand: 1. Software Engineering 2. Data Structures and Complexity 3. Decision-making under Uncertainty and how to build ML2OR pipelines 4. Modelling in Seeker, MIP, CP/SAT.
Speaking of naming roles, I’ve been asked many times to describe what we look for in our Decision Scientists (aka data scientists with optimization and operations research backgrounds or industrial/systems engineers...) 😅 naming izhard 📈 The field (and it’s use cases) are growing as data and predictive models make their way into nearly every company. So what should you look for when hiring an engineer to build your routing, scheduling, or matching model? 👇 Here’s our list! Hit us up in the comments with what you think or follow along on our discuss board: https://lnkd.in/eMqNX8sU 🤖 Technical: * MS or PhD in Operations Research or a related field * Experience with integer or constraint programming * Experience in real-time modeling * Experience implementing or using meta-heuristics / meta-heuristic tool sets * Experience using SAT, CP or MIP modeling tools * Familiarity with software development best practices (e.g. agile methodologies and git workflows) * Programming experience in Go, Python, Java, or a similar language * Familiarity with R or Python for analysis * Knowledge of standard experiment frameworks and statistical tests 🤝 Collaboration: * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills * Experience guiding stakeholder decisions with data * Experience communicating results of complex algorithms * Comfortable working with stakeholders to apply optimization technology to their use case * Experience breaking down a complex business process * Willingness to guide KPI definition and output views with stakeholders ➕ Not required, but a plus: * Remote work experience (our 🐰s are all over!) * Interest in decision diagrams and other optimization techniques * Experience scaling cloud services

Why aren’t there many entry-level data engineering roles? There’s a few reasons for this: - data engineers produce data that is relied on by many people. Relying on a zero years of experience person to do that is a little riskier. - data engineering requires a unique blend of communication skills and technical skills, like data science, that makes it harder for juniors to ramp up effectively. - many companies only need one or two data engineers. So there’s no mentorship/growth path for juniors at these companies. Therefore they prefer to hire senior engineers. Why else do you think there aren’t many Junior data engineering positions? #dataengineering

The data engineering field has seen a significant number of professionals transitioning from a Software Engineering background, as approximately 42% of data engineers have graduated from a Software Engineering role. This statistic reflects the natural synergy between the two disciplines, as data engineering often involves working with large-scale data systems, building data pipelines, and managing data infrastructure—all of which require software engineering skills and expertise. The transfer of talent between these two domains highlights the flexibility and interconnectedness of roles within the broader technology industry, as individuals leverage their programming and engineering knowledge to contribute to the burgeoning field of data engineering. #TalentR #DataEngineeringTransition #SoftwareEngineersInData #DataEngineeringSynergy #TechIndustryInterconnectedness
