Team Building That Doesn't Suck! Have you ever been traumatized by a team-building event? You know the kind I am talking about: trust falls, tug-of-war, paintball, hula hoop contests. While they unfortunately still exist, thankfully, there is an alternative. Imagine asking your employees the ten things they like to do for fun instead of inflicting someone else's idea of fun on them. You see, fun is different for everyone but you can find a common Shared Experience between 2 or 2000 people. Aggregate the data, and presto! - You will find common responses or shared experiences among your employees. The mere fact that you ask and value their opinion engages them in the process and sets you up for success. Next, make the activity all-inclusive and non-threatening by allowing people to participate at the level they are comfortable. For example, a recent client determined that two of their most popular shared experiences were outdoor activities and live music. They hosted a parking lot music festival featuring live music from their staff. The leaders chipped in to do the grilling while employees volunteered to bring complimentary food items, games, and decor. Pictures and videos of the event immortalized the day. Last week’s Parking Lot Palooza was a big hit. It connected and engaged employees, inspiring them to create quarterly activities around their other Shared Experiences. Let’s talk “LIVE” events. In production terms, this can mean many things. This recent one was “digital first” (explanation below). The key to success for any production is PRE-production. Before approaching a production partner, I recommend this short checklist. ➡️This exercise will also help a potential production partner scope the event properly. If someone gives you a quote without answers to these few questions, it’s a estimate (at best) and definitely incomplete. ✅Who is your audience, and what is the audience experience? ❓Is is online only (digital first)? ❓Is it a live in-person event (event first) that you’d like to stream/broadcast to a larger audience? ❓Is something in-between? An in-person and online audience? ❓How big is the audience? ❓Audience engagement: Will there be interaction in person and/or online? ✅ Content & Messaging ❓What are your objectives? What do you want your audience to walk away with? ❓What value are you providing? ❓What is the most time efficient way to achieve your objective and provide value? ❓Pre-edited content (speakers or segments) to share during the live event? ✅ Decide up front how you will leverage your content. Video on demand and cutdowns? ❓Will your program be posted for playback later, and if so, where? ❓How will you leverage the content? Ex. :30-:60 “lifts” for social? ❓What will the cutdowns be used for (what audience) and for what purpose (drive traffic? Thought leadership?). Notice a theme? Audience first!
