AIR-COOLED CHILLER Cooling Mechanism: These chillers are cooled by ambient air and do not require additional water sources. Condenser Location: The condenser unit typically sits outside, either on the roof or at ground level. Maintenance: Air-cooled chillers eliminate the need for cooling towers. However, regular maintenance includes cleaning the condenser coils and ensuring proper airflow. Energy Efficiency: They are generally less energy-efficient compared to water-cooled chillers. Pros: Lower maintenance costs, prepackaged design, better performance in freezing temperatures. Cons: Limited cooling capacity, reliance on free-flowing air. WATER-COOLED CHILLER Cooling Mechanism: These chillers use water for cooling and require a constant water supply. Condenser Location: The condenser (resembling a large tank) sits inside, surrounded by pipes containing the refrigerant gas. Maintenance: Water-cooled chillers require cooling towers (including water tanks, pumps, and tower fans). Regular maintenance involves water treatment, condenser-tube cleaning, and tower upkeep. Energy Efficiency: Water-cooled chillers are typically more energy-efficient due to lower condensing temperatures. Pros: Greater cooling capacity, precise temperature control, longer equipment life. Cons: Higher water consumption, larger footprint. In summary, air-cooled chillers are suitable for smaller applications and locations with freezing temperatures, while water-cooled chillers offer higher energy efficiency and larger capacities. New rules call for greater efficiency in the lighting of commercial buildings. New lighting requirements, set by the 2021 Part L Building Regulations (Conservation of Fuel and Power), came into force on June 15th. These changes aim to make homes and business premises more sustainable. They are of significant importance to architects, engineers, electrical contractors, lighting designers, and the owners and managers of non-residential buildings. The new regulations require that commercial buildings incorporate lighting systems that are more efficient, accurately measurable and provide precision lighting control. These regulations are in addition to the Single Lighting Regulation and the related Energy Labelling of Light Sources rules, which came into effect in December 2019. For the first time, lighting is a key element in the efficiency plan for all new commercial buildings. These changes will reduce the nation's greenhouse gas emissions, support the UK's drive to Net Zero, and ensure closer adherence to the targets set by numerous COP climate conferences.
