Evolution of a founder, the Hiring Edition: First, you try to hire people who do things just like you (that fails) then you try to hire people who think like you (that too) then you try to hire people who learn like you (ditto) only THEN do you really, deeply understand what it means to hire people who are *better* than you and what it means to *listen* to them. I'm working with the most talented people on the planet at Writer. Join us. We're not just selling a raw LLM. I agree, hiring and truly listening to folks ‘better’ than yourself requires the insight to acknowledge your own gaps - and the confidence to be open to having additional experienced opinions in the room. Leads to a far better long-range outcome and a more equally balanced executive leadership team.
May, hiring people who think differently, have different skills, education, experiences; and who are willing to listen and collaborate internally and externally = being successful together.
Amen. Surround yourself with folks with different styles, opinions, talents and passions. Then shut up and learn.
And "better" is nearly always "different." Took me a long time to learn that, but once I did, I was privileged to lead some amazing teams!
Everyone has something to teach us. A different perspective or different approach. The worst room we can be in is where we feel we are the smartest.
If each of us hires people who are smaller than we are, we shall become a company of dwarfs. But if each of us hires people who are bigger than we are, we shall become a company of giants. -David Ogilvy *Always loved this one
Will forever feel deeply that Writer is solving some very real and tangible problems. Love seeing all the transparency.
Love this. It takes grit to run a startup. It takes humility to hire people better than you. It takes courage to truly listening to them. Combine all this and you have a culture that everyone can thrive in, Thanks May for the insights!!!
