With increasing digitalization, financial customers can now shop around for the best offers online, leading many to abandon their local credit unions and wealth management firms for large FinTechs or national banks. However, EY research reveals that smaller financial companies have an irreplaceable edge over the big players: personalization. Smaller institutions excel at knowing their customer base and can cater to them better than their competitors. In fact, the 2024 survey found that 75% of consumers prefer smaller institutions to national banks when it comes to having a full set of digital marketplace infrastructure, which includes two-sided marketplaces and one-stop-shop support. This means local banks and credit unions have a strategic advantage in expanding their market share –– up to double what it is today, according to the report. The key lies in offering digital suites that meet customers’ precise needs, a target that smaller institutions are better equipped to hit given their deep understanding of their clientele.
