Learning about learning.
One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the way in which learning opportunities emerge from the actions and conversations taking place in front of me and the 'students' in the classes and workshops I facilitate and coach. Delivering educational sessions about #HOP, #humanfactors, #nontechnicalskills, #JustCulture, and #psychologicalsafety all lead to slightly different outcomes because of what happens and how we react or respond to them. No class is ever the same, and I am never the same after a class as before. The classes and workshops are complex systems. You can't return to where you were before you entered the room. Things have changed. But have they changed in the way you hoped, expected, or wanted? We only find out when we reflect on the activities and what has been taken away. The student is in control of the change, not the instructor or facilitator. They can only guide the direction of travel and point out markers.
Given the above, I was pleased that during call I had with Ivan Pupulidy, PhD last night he shared this video link with me. https://lnkd.in/eX7NMEWP
I watched it this evening, and it resonated with the call I had with Claire Hill this morning, where we were talking about what I love about my job, and why clients ask me to deliver to them, even if they've got to wait months for me to be there.
Emergence. Discovery. Exploration. Development. Ideas. Feedback. Failure. Insights. Innovation. These are all ideas and concepts that come to mind when I think about my delivery.
It is also why my instructor development programmes for The Human Diver are so comprehensive because I want these new instructors to be able to weave their magic and create an emergent narrative based on their experiences and those of the students in the class and what they are doing.

We want RefMasters to be the place where you're comfortable learning, making mistakes, and growing. That’s the fastest path to becoming a better official. Ask questions, don't be afraid to fail, and share your experiences so others can improve. When you teach from your own mistakes, you grow.
You’re not just learning from me, James Williams, or Brandon —you’re learning from everyone in the community. Our real goal is to change how officiating is seen. If we can create a culture where it’s okay to fail and learn, we’ll keep more referees, bring in new ones, and keep building this amazing community of lifelong connections.
James and I have been friends for over 20 years, and we’ve seen how strong relationships can change the game. Let’s keep growing together and make a real difference in officiating.
