Place2Be reminds us that 1 in 6 children and young people have a diagnosable mental health condition - which is why it's so important for all of us to listen to children and young people and enable them to express themselves. We often talk about the positive effects of educational visits and outdoor learning on mental health and wellbeing. Aside from the experiences themselves, connections to nature, building self-confidence and the rest, educational visits can also provide the opportunity to listen to children and talk with them in a different environment. Mental Health Awareness Week includes you teachers, too. That's why STEER's toolkit is not only trying to reduce and improve the mental health risks of your students, but also lifts off the heavy load for teachers who are providing that support. And as one new STEER user recently put it, “You no longer need a Level 3 in social work or a BTEC in counselling to accurately identify vulnerable pupils because STEER does it for you”.
