Honoring Black Innovators and Leaders in Transportation- Garrett Morgan I would like to introduce Garrett Morgan. Garret Morgan was an American businessman, community leader, and inventor of the 3-way traffic light. The Inspiration: In 1922, he witnessed an accident between a horse-drawn carriage and a car carrying a young child which sparked inspiration to prevent the likelihood of future events occurring. The How: Morgan created a folding traffic signal with folding arms with "stop" and "go" written on many signs which would be situated on a post above traffic. The signals could also be raised halfway in between to indicate caution moving forward. Although Morgan’s invention was not the first traffic signal, it controlled traffic better than many earlier signals had. He patented it in 1923 and eventually sold the rights to the device to the General Electric Corporation for $40,000. #freight #experience #analytics #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #supplychainsolutions #logisticscompany #logistics #shippers #imports #everythingfreight #smallbusiness #environmentalsustainability #environmentallyfriendly #sustainability #oceanfreight #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #innovation

This photo captures the year's first sunrise, unfiltered—a serene promise of new beginnings and boundless possibilities. As we unfurl the fresh canvas of 2024, I'd like to ask: If each day added a brushstroke, what masterpiece would we reveal by 2025? The conclusion of the past year was a time to celebrate monumental achievements. I witnessed a client navigate a political labyrinth to secure her promotion—a saga worthy of a Rachel Maddows feature. Another saw her revenues double, a testament to the power of strategic messaging we carefully crafted. And competing with Big Law, yet another clinched a significant industry accolade, all within her firm's first year of operation. These stories are not solitary triumphs; they embody a truth we collectively embrace: Success transcends the attainment of goals. It's about finding purpose and joy in the daily strides we make toward our aspirations. As we step into the new year, here's to creating magic when we commit to our dreams and to each other. PS: Keep an eye out for some exciting announcements coming soon! #WomenInLaw #NewYearNewJourney #DailyProgress

Today, as the Civil Rights Act turns 60, we can’t help but reflect on how it happened. Not just the marches, meetings, and bill signing, but also that Dr. King breached a gaping hole in America’s power structure. He didn’t just challenge discrimination laws; he challenged elected office holders, including two presidents whose powers were protected by those laws. It is hard to imagine that approach in today’s world where the modern consulting class so often works, undoubtedly without intention, to the detriment of bold vision and calculated risk. As King biographer, Jonathan Eig wrote in the New York Times last year, “Americans prefer a version of history in which most decent people did the right thing in the end.” But as is now well documented, the idea of federal civil rights policy was forced onto Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson and others in Washington who did not believe it was an idea whose time had, or should, come. Imagine the rooms where it happened; King, Rustin and so many others negotiated among themselves the ways to persist without becoming arrested in concern over their access to the Oval Office. They knew it was a tool, not the prize. They did not have to maintain status at the White House. Even as they represented a political thorn, King knew that his movement was marshaling the attention and energy of the people to keep a standing invitation. Consultants to movements have a responsibility to counsel in service of the mission, and to discard the notion that the business imperative is to maintain their own standing. We cannot sell our services by professing commitment to missions and recommend lukewarm strategies and tactics that stall and undermine them. So much depends on our ability to help leaders define achievable, bold missions; clarify goals; decide upon the next right move; and then act, learn and refine. Yes, our relationships matter, but there is no business development strategy quite like winning.

Certified EOS Implementer - Entrepreneurial Operating System Implementation | 1988 USVI Olympic Sailing Team | Award Winning Author of "A Well-Launched Life" | Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt
I published a book in 1993. It was such a nightmare, I promised myself I would never write another book. Years ago, Nancy L. Erickson was the guest speaker at a Business Development Team (BDT) meeting. During her presentation, my memory of writing my first book triggered me and I couldn’t wait to get out of there. God had a different plan. I left that meeting telling myself, “No freaking way I’m ever writing a book again.” Over the course of the next year, God was tugging at my heart. I called Nancy for an exploratory conversation. Long story short, here is my book: A Well-Launched Life: How Young People Can Live an Intentional, Fulfilling Life https://a.co/d/bIVZw2a I consider myself a “process” expert. Nancy’s process for helping you write a book that will help other people is OUTSTANDING!!! If you have a story in your head that will benefit other people, you need to call Nancy for 2 reasons: 1) Left alone, you will never finish writing your book. 2) If you were capable of proving my #1 reason above incorrect, the finished product would be sub-par compared to the finished product you would produce using Nancy’s process. Now pick up your phone and call Nancy! #awelllaunchedlife #thebookprofessor #lifecoaching

Honoring Black Innovators and Leaders in Transportation- Andrew Jackson Beard I would like to introduce Andrew Jackson Beard . Andrew Jackson Beard was a former slave, a farmer, carpenter, blacksmith, railroad worker, businessman and inventor of the first automatic coupler for railcars. The Inspiration: November 23, 1897 , A railroad worker would stand between the two railroad cars to guide the linking pieces into place and insert a metal pin that held the pieces together. Often, the heavy cars would crush the middleman before he could drop the pin into place. Beard himself had lost a leg in a car coupling accident. The How: Beard eliminated the need for a worker to stand dangerously between the two train cars by designing an improvement to the railroad car couplers. Beard's railroad car coupler improvement included two horizontal jaws, which automatically locked together upon joining. Beard's improved and safer to use invention was the first automatic coupler widely used in the United States and easily saved many lives and limbs. The patent was sold for $50,000 in 1897 (equivalent to $1.8 million in 2022). #freight #experience #analytics #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #supplychainsolutions #logisticscompany #logistics #shippers #imports #everythingfreight #smallbusiness #environmentalsustainability #environmentallyfriendly #sustainability #oceanfreight
