Yom Kippur, or "Day of Atonement," is considered the holiest day on the Jewish calendar and occurs on the 10th day of the Hebrew month Tishrei.  Yom Kippur is observed by fasting, prayer and repentance at the conclusion of the High Holiday period, which begins with Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish New Year, and includes Yamim Noraim, or the "Days of Awe."

Mayo Clinic’s Dr. James Bower visited KPJ Healthcare Bhd to attend a neurology forum on movement disorders. The event brought leading neurologists, healthcare professionals and specialists together to discuss the latest treatment advancements and share clinical insights. Dr. Bower shared his insight on the medical treatment of Parkinson's disease. Physicians from both Medica Sur and Mayo Clinic participated to share their knowledge and expertise. "The event was an impressive collection of outstanding lectures, insightful talks, and workshops. The number of registrants set a record, both virtual and in person,” said Dr. Joseph Sirven, Mayo Clinic neurologist and the event’s co-director. “Beyond the science, the bonds of camaraderie and friendship we’ve formed between institutions, countries and cultures will carry us forward to better help our patients across the Americas and in turn globally." Oluwadamilola Oladeru, M.D., M.B.A., is a radiation oncologist at Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center in Florida with expertise in breast cancer treatment. She is committed to delivering personalized, compassionate care that prioritizes both the physical and emotional well-being of her patients. A strong advocate for shared decision-making, Dr. Oladeru focuses on preserving quality of life throughout treatment. She aims to maximize therapeutic outcomes while minimizing side effects, ensuring both short-term and long-term impacts align with each patient’s lifestyle and aspirations. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Oladeru serves as the National Health Equity Chair for an NIH-funded clinical study investigating whether computerized cognitive training can improve cancer-related cognitive impairment in breast cancer survivors, addressing critical issues like memory, concentration and decision-making. With multiple grants and awards from organizations such as ASCO, the Radiation Oncology Institute, BMSF, and the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Oladeru is at the forefront of research in breast cancer. Her work focuses on translating scientific discoveries into clinical applications, particularly in triple-negative breast cancer. Dr. Oladeru is also passionate about advancing health equity for underserved populations. She leads outreach efforts aimed at improving cancer care access for high-risk groups such as incarcerated women. As the Director of Education for Rayos Contra Cancer, she works globally to improve access to radiation therapy in low- and middle-income countries.

Lewy body dementia (LBD) can rob patients of memory and cause other symptoms like hallucinations, depression, movement disorders and sleep problems. The progressive neurodegenerative disease has no cure. To help them better understand the pathology of the disease, Mayo Clinic researchers developed 'mini brain' models in a petri dish to mimic LBD in humans. Xi'an International Medical Center Hospital, a Mayo Clinic Care Network member, hosted a conference to discuss the latest research and future direction of cervical spine surgery. The event was attended by renowned cervical spine surgery experts from across the globe, including Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Brett Freedman, chair of the Division of Spine Surgery. Dr. Freedman presented at the event and shared his expertise on cervical disc replacement. “I had the great honor to attend and participate in this world-class meeting, at a world class medical facility,” said Dr. Freedman. “Outstanding event, I can’t wait for next year!”
