Social media (and other similar online platforms) have a responsibility for transparency around their algorithms, about how to reset them, and how to thoughtfully curate content/your feed, and more. However, a warning label is neither supported by current research nor provides a solution for something much more complex than tobacco use. I worry quite a bit about taking a fear-mongering approach to social media. For some teens, it serves as a crucial social connector. This approach also overlooks the fact that if we teach young kids and adolescents how to regulate and navigate their own usage, we're providing them with critical thinking skills, supporting their agency, and telling them we have faith in their ability to make autonomous choices about responsible, healthy social media use.
What do you think? Much as I dislike social media forms and the time suck they represent, the #SurgeonGeneral’s JAMA citation is of a ten year old study of self-report measures. I’m fine with the holding of social media companies to account. Are social media worthy of a warning label? More than Fox News Media for disseminating false information?

Growing up in a pre-social media era, I never had to worry about a photo capturing a moment of misjudgment and living on forever. Unfortunately, depression is on the rise in children and social media could be a contributing factor. It was surprising to hear that one of the discussed topics among influential people at Davos was to ban Social Media for minors. While my kids are too young for cell phones, I know that many children now prefer Snapchat over SMS for communication. As someone who values free speech, I do believe that social media has its benefits. However, if banning social media for minors helps improve children's mental health during their formative years, then I fully support it. It is important that we prioritize the well-being of our youth over the convenience of social media. Let's work together to create a safer and healthier environment for our children. #mentalhealthawareness

Are we creating weaker minds? 🧠 While most of us grew up with a favorite toy 🧸, today the favorite toy for most kids is the "smart gadget," also known as the phone 📱 - almost every kid has a social media account. 🤳 Have you ever wondered about the impact of such overloaded content on a developing mind? According to many studies, it can have devastating effects 🤐 Leaving aside the quantity of content; let's talk about the QUALITY of content - what are our kids and teens consuming? 🧐 • Most use social media as a gateway for avoidance and creation of alternative reality for distraction.🥱😶🌫️ • The short-piece of content that they are tuned to, not only make them seek instant gratification by flooding their system with huge levels of dopamine; but also affect the development of their cognitive apparatus (prefrontal cortex) - which is crucial for the development of healthy and self-regulated adults.👤🤯 • Except for a few countries with serious regulations - most of our teens and kids are exposed to the content of booty shaking, half-naked nudity, propagation of fancy lifestyle, aggressive, aesthetic and exotic content. 👀🕳️ Usage of Social Media, isn't it a Personal Choice? Yes, it is, but the ability to make decisions is typically given to adults at the age of 18 and above. Until then the most crucial decisions are by parents or caregivers. Then, why have a different view for social media usage? 🔞 The quality of content they are exposed to make them move away from the reality of life and question their own worth and make them feel never good enough because of the constant need for validation💬🪧 The social media algorithms are crafted in such a way that they want to catch you early and keep you hooked by tracking your every minute movements, so that you are left with no alternatives to life at all!🪤⏳ What can we do as a society? 1. Advocate for serious policies and regulations so the line is drawn where it is meant to be and accountability is built of both the users and the platforms.📑 2. Monitor their content to identify early risk and expose them to stimulating content that can build rather than break them (social media is a powerful tool; "IF" used appropriately)🧐 3. Build Alternatives: Lead by example and show them alternative ways of building life and making memories away from social media.🛤️🌌 4. Open Communication: During crucial years, sensitive them with relevant topics that are of need to them so that they get information from reliable sources.👫🧑🤝🧑 It's time to act, because repair and rehabilitation will cost us more than building and development.
