This hiking etiquette tip might get *a little* messy. Do you know what to do when encountering mud and/or puddles on the trail? Hikers should walk through the mud or puddle and only around it if they can do so without going off the trail. Widening a trail by going around mud, puddles, etc., is bad for trail sustainability, and you never want to create social trails. If you want to avoid getting your boots exceptionally muddy, consider slipping a pair of water shoes or sandals into your pack if you know you're likely to encounter mud and/or puddles on the trail. Don't mind getting a little dirty? Enjoy the experience, and be mindful of your footing, as mud can be slippery! Help preserve the trail by staying on the trail! #AmericanHikingSociety #AmericanHiking #HikingResources #HikingAdventure #HikingAdventures #OutdoorAdventures #Hiking101 #HikingAdvice #DayHike #HikingFun #HikingEtiquette #HikingTips #HikingCommunity #OutdoorCommunity #TrailTips #TrailEtiquette #FindYourTrail #SeekTheTrails

Ah, trekking poles, the best kind of supportive hiking companion. 💚 Did you know that hiking with trekking poles can provide a handful of benefits (including providing moral support 😉)? Hiking with trekking poles can help to: 🦵 Protect your knees: When walking downhill, poles allow the muscles of the upper body to “take over” some of the cushioning tasks often assumed by the quadriceps and smaller, discrete muscles that support the knee. This means that hikers using two trekking poles experience less knee pain—especially during descents, but also on level terrain. 🏔 Ease ascents: Poles also allow the muscles of the upper body to “help out” the legs during ascents. Walking up a steep hill, hikers with poles notice that the ability to push off with poles gives them a distinct advantage. Poles can also correct posture during ascent, keeping your head elevated and your lungs fully expanded. ⚖️ Increase stability: The occasional stumble is part of any hike. Poles provide two additional points of contact with the ground and enhance stability. Poles also allow hikers to brace themselves on their poles to remain steady and upright, instead of falling after a stumble. Do you like hiking with poles? #AmericanHikingSociety #AmericanHiking #OutdoorGear #HikingGear #HikingPoles #TrekkingPoles #HikingLife #HikerLife #HikingCommunity #OutdoorCommunity #TrailChat #OverheardOnTheTrail #AHSOverheardOnTheTrail #StuffHikersSay #HikerHumor

Hike navigation tools and techniques Knowing how to navigate a hiking trail is an essential skill While hiking is a relatively safe outdoor activity, it is only safe if you are prepared and know how to navigate the Australian bush. The key to any successful hike is knowing where you are going, where you have been and how to return safely. 🌊 Why Should Mountain Towns Have All the Fun? When we think of adventure lodging, brands like Gravity Haus, LOGE Camps, Campfire Ranch, Trailborn have mastered creating incredible community-driven basecamps in mountain towns. They cater to adventurers who love skiing, climbing, biking, and hiking—but what about the other side of the adventure spectrum? Imagine this: a coastal basecamp designed for snorkeling, scuba diving, paddleboarding, and sailing. A space where ocean enthusiasts can connect, gear up, and recharge—without losing the sense of camaraderie and convenience these brands have mastered. Here’s what it could look like: Gear rentals by Patagonia for eco-friendly wetsuits and water apparel. Dive equipment libraries powered by Aqua Lung or Cressi for seamless underwater adventures. Marine conservation workshops led by The Nature Conservancy or PADI AWARE Foundation. Sustainable dining experiences featuring fresh, local seafood curated in partnership with Yeti and Sea to Summit Global gear. Places like Riviera Beach, FL, with its stunning Peanut Island reefs and crystal-clear waters, are prime locations for this concept. I'm biased because I want more adventure brands developing communities on the coast. What brands would you love to see step into this space? #DestinationDevelopment
