Australia's New Visa Policies Aim to Deter International Students The Australian government is implementing measures to discourage international students from choosing Australia for their education. The recent increase in visa application fees, now at AUD 1,600, is more than double the previous amount. According to The Economic Times, fees for student visas have risen from AUD 710 to AUD 1,600 (USD 1,068). This move, effective immediately, aims to curb migration, which is putting pressure on the housing market. Additionally, visitor visa holders and students with temporary visas will not be allowed to apply for student visas while in the country. In 2022-23, the number of international students in Australia increased by 30%. To prevent students from extending their stay, the government plans to address loopholes in visa rules through such changes. Compared to the US and Canada, where student visa fees are USD 185 and USD 110, respectively, this fee hike makes Australia a more expensive option for prospective students. Further measures include tightening English language requirements in March and increasing savings amounts required by students in May. Summary of todays Australia 🇦🇺update ! Changes made by Australian Government replacing the current Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) with Genuine Student Requirement for Student Visas starting 23 March 2024. Key highlights of this change include: - The GS requirement starts for applications lodged from 23 March 2024; applications before this date follow existing rules. - The GS requirement focuses on the student's genuine intent for education, not future migration. - Student visa applications will now include targeted questions rather than a 300-word statement, covering the applicant’s circumstances, reasons for choosing their course and Australia, and other relevant details. - The Student visa declaration will be updated to emphasize understanding and compliance with the visa conditions and the limited post-study migration pathways. - IELTS/ PTE requirements may be upgraded for Student and Temporary Graduate visas, details of which will be provided after further consultations. Updated Australian Student Visa Requirements: What You Need to Know 🧑🎓 Australia has replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for student visas with a Genuine Student (GS) requirement, impacting potential international students. These changes will only apply to visa applications filed after 23 March 2024 to ensure that students entering the country are well-prepared linguistically, financially stable, and are genuine in their intentions to study. ☑ English Language Proficiency Requirement - The minimum required test scores for both Temporary Graduate visas (TGV) and student visas have been raised. For TGV, the required IELTS score increased from 6.0 to 6.5, while for student visas, it moves from IELTS (or equivalent) 5.5 to 6.0. ☑ Validity Window for English Language Tests: The validity window for English language test results for TGV applicants has been reduced from 3 years to just 1 year. This means that applicants must provide evidence of completing an English language test within 1 year immediately preceding the date of their visa application. ☑ Increased Financial Requirement: To be eligible for a student visa, applicants must now demonstrate evidence of possessing at least A$24,505 in savings. This adjustment in the financial requirement reflects the cost of living and studying in Australia and aims to ensure that students have sufficient resources to support themselves during their stay. Prospective international students, keep yourself updated on the visa application process to ensure a seamless transition into your studies in Australia🌏! #AustraliaEconomy #InternationalStudents #StudentAccommodation #YSuites #Studentliving #studentlife #studyabroad #australiaeducation #internationaleducation
