One of the original objectives of the Three Seas Initiative (3SI) was increasing North-South connectivity in Central and Eastern Europe. Our modelling shows how relevant that objective is for the region's power sector - by 2030 cross-border electricity flows will increase almost across the whole 3SI. That is why we're proposing a Three Seas Transmission Highway, connecting and coordinating the many bilateral interconnection projects already happening in the region. More recommendations here: https://lnkd.in/dUqsqtHp Our related opinion piece is also available in CEENERGYNEWS: https://lnkd.in/dRCGTWYn #3SI #energy #cee #interconnection #renewables

On March 1, the IPA released its final Policy Study. The IPA Policy Study analyzes three policy proposals considered during the Spring 2023 session of the Illinois General Assembly: planning and procurement to support the development of energy storage systems, the development of an offshore wind project in Lake Michigan, and the construction of an underground high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line. Prior to releasing the final Policy Study, the Agency released a draft Policy Study in January, and received stakeholder feedback on that draft. The Agency appreciates the time stakeholders took to provide feedback on the Study. Please visit the Policy Study webpage for the Final Policy Study, supporting documentation, stakeholder feedback, and additional information. https://lnkd.in/g8TKhR-6 #IPA #PolicyStudy #WindEnergy #EnergyStorage #HVDC #energypolicy

🌊 Subsea superhighway moves closer to construction 🌊 The £2.5bn east coast subsea highway, the Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1), has moved one step closer to construction with energy regulator Ofgem confirming it’s the first project to proceed under its new fast track process. The project, a joint venture between partners National Grid Electricity Transmission and SP Transmission, part of SP Energy Networks, will form a vital part of the UK’s electricity infrastructure needed to reach #NetZero. The 196km link will transport power via a high voltage subsea electricity cable from Torness in East Lothian, Scotland, to Hawthorn Pit in County Durham, England, enabling the transmission of renewable green energy to power around two million homes across the UK. At EU PVSEC 2024, Daniel Mugnier, chair of the IEA PVPS - Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme, emphasized Europe's need to focus on "PV Everywhere" to unlock new opportunities and drive innovation in #photovoltaic systems. In an interview with OPIS, Mugnier highlighted the importance of exploring integrated PV ecosystems beyond standard modules, saying, "New uses of PV are set to explode, creating real added value for Europe." With only 20-30% of rooftop PV project costs coming from #solar modules, the opportunity lies in optimizing the rest. Europe's advantage? Pioneering integrated PV systems, storage, and grid connections. #SolarPV #EUPVSEC2024 #SolarEnergy

Given the sizeable energy requirements at ports and terminals, many port authorities and terminal operators are looking to replace conventional fuel-based energy sources with green or renewable energy. One such source is solar energy, which involves upfront investment in installing solar panels but thereafter generates benefits in the form of lower consumption of conventional energy, lower electricity costs, and reduced emissions. In the UK, the Portsmouth International Port was the first in the country to utilise solar canopies to power its operations. In the US, the port of Corpus Christi, Texas, is another example of a port exploring solar energy. At CEM, we think that this forward-thinking initiative sets a commendable example showcasing the immense potential of renewable energy integration within the port infrastructure sector. This October, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced a $1.5 billion grant that will be awarded and distributed among four major transmission projects. The funding provided via the DOE is sourced from the DOE’s Transmission Facilitation Program. The transmission projects selected to receive federal funding via the grant include the Southern Spirit Transmission Project; Cimarron Link; Avangrid’s Aroostook Renewable Project; and the Southline Transmission Project. Collectively, the four proposed transmission projects total approximately 1,000 miles among the states of Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The combined four proposed projects will further create about 9,000 construction and operation focused jobs and have the ability connect and transfer up to 7.1 gigawatts of new energy generating capacity throughout the involved states. #DOE #TransmissionProject #Transmission #ElectricGrid #SouthernSpirit #CimarronLink #AroostookRenewable #SouthlineTransmission #ProposedTransmission #EnergyCapacity #MAPSearch #ENvision
